Norris Green Locket Mystery

Post by Steve M »

I am not sure whether this is the best place to post this enquiry and would welcome any advice about where better to post it.

A relative of mine worked for the council and visited a house in Norris Green in the late 1960s or early 70s following the death of the occupant and the removal of her property. The house was next to St. Theresa's Church on the street at the side of the church. Various items had been left in the house including a number of religious statues which lead my relative to think there may have been a link to the church. Whilst ther my relative found a locket containing photographs of a man and a woman. As the house was to be cleared he took this in the hope of contacting a family member of the lady who had died.

This is an image of the locketImage

If someone can embed the actual image I would be grateful. I will try to take a higher resolution image.

My relative had no luck tracing a family member and mentioned it to a friend of his, Simon Mahon, who was the local MP. Simon contacted the Liverpool Echo and they ran a story about this. After this Simon was warned off by the Liverpool Echo after an influential person had contacted them and told them not to pursue the story. After this my relative was approached by a national newspaper but didn't get involved following the warning.
My relative has always wondered what the story was behind the locket and hoped to pass it on to a relative of those in the pictures.

As far as I can see the cap badge in the photo is from the South Staffordshire regiment. Could anyone possibly date the uniform?

Does anyone know if the Liverpool Echo archives from this time are available on line, or if anyone has any ideas about how to pursue this further I would be very grateful.

Regards

Steve Mallon

Wow!! How interesting. I can't be of any help, except to say that I believe Simon Mahon was the MP for Bootle.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The link to the image doesn't work as it takes us only to our own photobucket login.

When you have uploaded the image, click on it and to the right there will be a link that if you click on it, it will say "copied" and you can paste it here.

You could perhaps try the British Newspaper Archives to see if the Echo is online there at that date, otherwise they are on microfilm at the Liverpool Record Office.

If the exact address could be identified, also at the Record Office are Trade and Street Directories which should identify who lived there and also the Electoral Registers may help.

Lynne you are correct about Simon Mahon, my relative new him from drinking at St Monica's social club on Fernhill Road.

I'm afraid no one ever found out who the influential person was, and this makes it all the more interesting.

I am struggling to get the link to the image working, will try again tomorrow.

Thanks

Steve

I would put it on social media Simon, not just on your own Facebook page if you have one but there are thousands of local genealogy sites on there.

If you follow Mary's instructions, you arrive at what you can see below, your image on the left, Box to the right, click bottom box and it will flash yellow, ready to paste here.

Addresses near to west side of St Teresa’s church, Norris Green:-

128 Sedgemoor Road (opposite side of church)
157 Utting Avenue East (adjoining to the south of 128 Sedgemoor Road)
126 Sedgemoor Road (north of 128 opposite presbytery)

Addresses near to east side of St Teresa’s, next to the school this does not appear to be the area as described but was of interest because of the occupants in 1938:-

221 & 223 Utting Avenue East (Kelly’s Directory 1938: Sisters of the Immaculate Conception)

The occupant of 128 Sedgemoor Road in Kelly’s Directory 1938 was a spinster she died in 1961 and was buried at Ford RC Cemetery. Perhaps the locket belonged to a later occupant of this address.

Still struggling with the image. For some reason the image url isn't complete when I paste it. Will try again.

Very interesting the information about the addresses. Will pull up a map and try to pinpoint exactly where the house was when I next see my relative.

Thanks

That's a lovely locket. The hat on the man sort of reminds me of an Indian officer?

As Mary A suggests the electoral registers at the Liverpool Record Office will show you who was living in the nearby properties and when they stopped appearing at those addresses.

I have spoken to my relative and shown him the map and he is quite sure that the house in question is one of the two adjoining properties 157 Utting Avenue or 128 Sedgemoor Road opposite St Theresa's Church. Can the electoral registers be viewed online?

The military hat I think was standard British army issue for troops serving in warm climates. As mentioned previously I am pretty sure you he cap badge is the South Staffordshire Regiment.

No the electoral registers are not online unfortunately. I think you're best contacting the Liverpool Record Office to ask them about going there to view specific years for those two addresses. You can photograph pages of interest for future reference:-
