Normandy memorials & graves

Post by salee »

hi, not been on the forum for a while because of moving house.

we now live in lower (south) Normandy,

during the summer i intend to take days out to visit some of the war sites, graves & memorials of the region, if anyone wants a photo taking of any of them please let me know, if it is a grave could you say which cemetary, row etc as some are sadly very very big places.

as we have driven around we have also noticed many small memorials, some to a single soldier, some seem almost personal as they are in gardens or at the side of the road or crossroad in villages, to anyone who lost someone in the WW2 i can assure them the people of Normandy have not forgotten.
bye

hello Salee,That is a very generous offer you are making.
In 2004,we visited France and the week we were there happened to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the D.Day landings. On our last day ,on our way back to the ferry port we came across the Bayeux war cemetery.....what an amazing place. It is huge,an immaculate dedication to all those who are buried there..all nationalities and across the road another long memorial wall. It is all very emotional walking round the grounds but you must go if you get the chance. When we left, we then "found"ARROMANCHES.A small town where the landings took place all the "pontoons?" still in the water The whole town was covered in union jack flags.there were small monuments in the town also..We couldnt believe that we had found this town just by chance....I have said it was meant to be and it was a day i will not forget..
I hope you soon settle in your new home.Good luck. Jean
