Having spent a very successful weekend on Findmypast's free offer, I now have a problem

I found numerous newspaper snippets which I tried to print. However all I managed to print off was the whole page of newspaper print and of course the relevant item was tiny! I tried all sorts of ways to just print the article I wanted without success.

So in very easy not too technical stages, could someone please tell me the best way to just print the article

Not sure it would work for you but when I search the newspapers at Lancashire libraries for the Australian Convicts I use the snipping tool. You can select a rectangular shape and I just go round the piece I want and save it.
Hope this helps. Eileen who does the convicts gave me this tip and it is useful.

Yes it is a pdf file, but I have to open it in Microsoft Edge after I have downloaded it. I can zoom in to the snippet, but can't seem to be able to save it then.

Thanks for your input, it sounds a good idea, but where do I find a snipping tool Told you not to make it too technical

I use an extremely good - and FREE - programme called Irfanview, works like the more expensive photoshop kind of software but I find it much easier. I can draw a box around the small bit I want and then just "Edit > Crop" and then when I save choose to save in the same folder and I can actually overwrite the original with the useful size, or create a new file. I can also adjust for size and angle too.

Generally this is what I use whenever clipping something to use on the forum.

You might be able to get around this somewhat without snipping although it would be best if you could make it into a JPEG and then edit it. There is freeware that you can download that has image editing options such as IrfanView which I had on my old PC and which I noticed being used on the PCs in my local library. Some links:-

Okay so let's continue for now without accessing IrfanView or other editing suites. The articles should be accessible from "My records" when you are signed in on FMP. When viewing the item click on the bottom symbol on the "cross" to the left of the item to go to full screen. Then click on + on the "cross" to zoom and move the image with your cursor to get the best possible view of the article. You can then press PrtScn on your keyboard and paste the image into a programme like Paint and save it as a JPEG image and print it.

open it, whatever you want to snip, hold left click(mouse) and drag the area you want, release and close, top right X, then save, goes in to My Pictures.

Bertie, I'll have a look on my system which is Windows 10. I'm still feeling my way around it as I had to have my laptop rebuilt last year and Windows 10 was put on, very different, so it is taking sometime to get the hang of it

I don't know Irfanview, but FSCapture is really useful. It sits minimised discreetly on top of everything and is always ready to use. I never investigated all its possibilities; just click one icon to do a full screen capture or another to drag a selection. The resulting capture can be saved or copied into e.g. Photoshop. IIRC, it can capture a scrolling window.

With any tool; if you need to subsequently align two captures in Photoshop, the trick is to have an overlap and use DIFFERENCE Blend Mode for the top layer. Drag to align the top layer roughly, then fine tune with the arrow keys. When the layers are aligned, the overlap will be Black.

There is another fairly easy way which is to zoom in to the section you want. Then press the print screen button on your keyboard (might be marked printscn). This will make a copy of your screen. Then if you open Paint which comes free with Windows and click on Paste you will have a picture of your screen. You can use the selection tool to draw around the section you want to keep then click crop and the picture will be reduced to just the bit you want. If it goes wrong click paste again.
