I have the following record of a burial at Anfield in the Roman Catholic Section.

62914 R/C 14th-Nov-1921 Seferino Arrupe 26 Corporal-E Company, U.S.A Infantry 41, Hurst Street Liverpool Private 1 840

I am going to double check his entry while at Liverpool To-day as I can't find a death Registration for him here in England. And according to a entry I have located on a Website he was reported as being KIA in a Casualty Lists published 1918.

I have sent an email to Liverpool Direct just to confirm I have the correct details. There is a Obituary reporting him as being Killed in Action in France in 1918. I will check to see if there is another obituary in 1921. He is not showing up on the American War Monuments. Curiouser and Curiouser.

I'm wondering whether this lad has been left in limbo, as far as being on memorials are concerned. All I have read on him concerning his death is followed by, Liverpool, England.
It doesn't appear he achieved Naturalisation, He arrived in New York aboard the Lusitania, 6/Jan/1907, his Naturalisation declaration of intention was 27/Nov/1912. Don't know the answer, would a non American citizen be included on their War Memorials?

On his draft papers, when asked if there was reason he shouldn't be drafted, the answer was yes because of Partial Disability, they sent him anyway.

Just an update on this Service man. I am awaiting a reply from the Liverpool Cemeteries Office regarding the burial in November 1921 of this man. I have also asked a friend of mine who lives near Anfield Cemetery to see if there is a headstone.

I am also in contact with a Steve Marconi from San Pedro, California, where Seferino resided.

I also have a picture of the Soldier and the information reads:-

Liverpool Echo 15th October 1918

Corporal Seferino Arrupe, aged 26, has been killed in action in France, while serving with the American Forces. He was educated at St. Peter's School, Seel Street. He is deeply mourned by his mother, sisters, brother-in-laws and nephews at 30, Hurst Street, A mass will be said at nine o'clock on Thursday.

His age in the article is 26 years and and according to the Burial entry in 1921 he was 26 years old.

I have a theory regarding this.

Now it was not unusual for Soldiers to be reported as being Killed in action, later to turn up as POW or they have done a disappearing act and got off. I have an example of one such soldier called Arthur Fagan who was with the Cheshire Regiment

Arthur's Service records are on Ancestry and they make a interesting read.

He was reported as being Killed in action twice.
Court Marshalled
Sentenced to death for Desertion.
Given a reprieve and jailed for so many months hard labour.
What a hero. I think he belongs to my Fagan side. So perhaps this could be the story with Seferino and his death could be registered under a assumed name.

I have just had confirmation that Seferino Arrupe was buried in Anfield Cemetery on 14th November 1921.

So he was not KIA in 1918. Do a bit more diggng on this soldier. Need to locate his Death registration now.

I think Corporal Seferino Arrupe may have been repatriated by the family or the US Government in 1921 back to Liverpool from France. I know that the majority of US Army Service men who were buried here in Liverpool were repatriated back to the USA or to American Cemeteries here in England.

A friend of mine found the grave and it mentions Seferino being fatally wounded in July 1918 at Aisne France, which would explain why his age is recorded as 26 in the Register He is going to give me copies of the pictures tomorrow. When I have all the facts I will then see about finding out why he is not commemorated as a American Soldier Killed WW1.

This is going to be a tough one.

I could also see about getting him on the Town Hall. Need his Army number.

Which Roll of Honor database is he missing from? I'm not familiar with the USA arrangements for honoring their WW1 dead. I only know the ABMC and they don't even try to commemorate all servicemen, just those in their own cemeteries.

Thanks Amanda for those links I will get a email of the the Military Museum to see if I can get any Service papers for him. I would have thought that like our CWGC the American Version would have a listing of where all their Service men are to be found.

I have a copy of the headstone and it confirms my suspicion that he was Repatriated back to his Family here in Liverpool.

This Commission's databases contain only the names of those U.S. War Dead who are interred at or memorialized on the Tablets of Missing at the overseas American military cemeteries. These databases do not contain the names of those War Dead whose remains were returned to U.S. or other country of origin for permanent interment.
