Orford/Peninsula Barracks

I am trying to find information about my Grandfather who was a colour sergeant and is believed to have been based at Peninsula/Orford barracks. Rumour has it, he was born there. His name was Wyndham Gordon Goodburn Evans Morris. It may also be that his father was based there aswell with the same name as records pulled from WW1 show a Wyndham G G E Morris was with South Lancs regiment and the Lancaster Regiment. Is there any way of finding out this information? Also what regiment served there? I live in Warrington and I now know that it is a TA centre for 5/8 Kings ( or it was when I was in them for a brief period).

The South Lancs Regiment were based at Peninsular Barracks, their records are now held at the Queen's Lancashire Regimental Museum, Fulwood Barracks, Preston. PR28AA Tel. 01772 260362

It looks like his birth was rego'd in Warrington as Wyndham W E Morris
1st qtr 1913 maiden Green.
There is a marriage in 1906 for Wyndham Gordon G E Morris to Alice Green, Warrington rego.
1911 census has William Gordon Goodburn Evans in Warrington, Military household bn 1880. Could be worth a squizz Andy.

Hi Tina
This is what has confused the matter. My Grandfather was married to Alice Ireland, but unsure of when they married. Both were born about 1912 give or take a few years. I am in contact with another forum and they are under the impression that my grandad and great grandad shared the same name. What would be the possibilites of them both marrying an Alice??? But how many people do you know with the name Wyndham Gordon Goodburn Evans Morris?? I will sleep on it and have another look tomorrow.

It could be that Alice had a previous marriage, the way to find out is to check the certificate and see if she was noted as a widow - or what her father's name was. Of course it will also give you the groom's father, and so confirm everything.

The cheapest way is to check the marriage register for Warrington, St Barnabas, between October and December 1906. It sounds like you might live in the Warrington area, or not far, so perhaps you could get to the library there to check the records.

Well, the plot thickens.

I have just looked at the 1911 census and got the following results

My Great Grandad

Wyndham Gordon Goodburn Evans Morris born 1881, age at 1911 census 30, It was a military record and listed him as Orford Barracks as a sergeant. Also listed was Alice Morris (nee Green) born 1887 and 24 at the time of census also of Orford Barracks.

Is it not strange that my Grandad should have the same name as his father and married to a woman of the same name??

My Grandad
Wyndham Gordon Goodburn Evans Morris born about 1914 (still to check) married Alice Ireland

Im applying for the birth certs on monday, so all will become clear.

Wow, I have found lots out.
Right, My grandad didnt have the same name as his father as first thought. My grandad was Wyndham William Evans Morris and his Father was Wyndham Gordon Goodburn Evans Morris, both servered with the South Lancashire Regiment. Also my nans dad served with the South Lancashire regiment, he was Private James Ireland and also talk of my nans uncle, Sam Green being in the South Lancs aswell.
But that was only part of what I found out. I found out on Tuesday that I have a sister I never knew I had. Thanks to all who have pointed me in the right direction to find both living and dead relatives I never knew.

Revil my ggrandad died in 1901 at orford barracks ..i went to warrington library research department and looked at local papers Warrington Guardian ect and found his obituary i got lots of info of that it is worth a try and they will print it of for you for 50p Margaret

Warringto Library certainly is worth a visit. The local papers for both the Boer War and WW1 are excellent.
