42nd Regiment of Foot - Liverpool regiment?

Hi there
Not sure how much knowledge is in this group there but my great great grandfather was John Wood - a sergeant in the 42nd Regiment of Foot. or at least that is what is recorded on his daughter's wedding certificate.
The 1871 census has him employed on light duties and I know that come 1890 he was deceased. I assume he had left the army by 1871, but not sure if he was retired out. I can find the 42nd as a Highland regiment, part of the Black Watch. Is it likely that a lad from Kent (1821) ended up in the Black Watch, and ended up in Liverpool with and Irish wife?
What would be the best on-line sources? Can anyone direct me/shed some light?
