Was your man in the Royal Artilllery? BQMS normally means Battery Quartermaster Sergeant, an appointment in the RA who would wear a crown above three chevron on the upper arms.

I do not think there is/was a Battalion QMS.

Yes he was Daggers :D I just googled the letters and came up with battalion
Robert T Rudd 1882 to 1930. I have quite comprehensive knowledge about his ancestors and direct family but thought I would have a look at his military life if possible

Thanks

Simone
I do not how far you have reached with BQMS Rudd, but I can offer you the following.

I found his medal index card on Ancestry which gives his two numbers, 1005 and 675212. He earned the 1915 Star, having arrived in France on 29 Sept 1915, also the Victory and British War Medals.
The Territorial Force were all renumbered in 1917 and his later number falls in the block allocated to this unit: 1/1st West Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery which in 1914 was based at Windsor Barracks, Spekeland Street (near Edge Hill sidings). They formed part of the West Lancashire Division which was later given the number '55th' and fought with distinction on the Western Front. The Artillery Brigade was also renumbered and in May 1917 became '275th Brigade Royal Field Artillery,TF'.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Katie :D wonder what happened...

sadly no service record on Ancestry :(

He died in 1930, Ormskirk district.. I've sent for his death cert to try and find out why he was in that area :? he was from Liverpool, could be nothing... there was a rumour that the Rudd family had a music shop in Ormskirk but found nothing yet.
a letter in the family refers to Bob's untimely death

Also my grandfather spent some time in Ormskirk hospital when he was in Military Police in ww2, have never found out why he was in Ormskirk :? .... hoping Robert's death cert will shed some light

Nice photo, showing him as a sergeant. The small badge above the chevrons is a gun, which Royal Artillery sergeants wore and still do today. The photo must date from earlier than his promotion to BQMS, or there would be a crown there. It is unusual for that gun badge to be in cloth, as they were usually brass - one on each sleeve.
I cannot identify the badge or badges on the lower sleeve but think they may be special to the Territorials.

Thanks again Daggers, I have what must be an earlier one too, with just 2 chevrons.

Yes, brilliant isn't it Mary :D sadly the sample of the book doesn't go to postcard no 9, which is the one I need. Not sure I want to pay out about £20 just to get the one photo, will have to search around a bit more I think

Robert was my great grandmother's brother..
It's funny the 1905 photo of him in the Anfield BC, I see my son looking back at me......... don't you just love seeing those resemblances...... :D
