Off out for most of the day to the Record Office so can I leave this with you to see if anybody has any thoughts please.

Trying to put together a bio for the heroes buried in Walton Parochial Cemetery and for one of these I have come across this anomaly.

This entry is on two subscription sites, Source being given as the National Archives TNA Series: ADM 242/7; Scan Number: 0772.

UK, Royal Navy and Royal Marine War Graves Roll, 1914-1919
First name(s) George John
Last name Clarke
Birth year 1896
Birth day 11
Birth month Jan
Birth town St Georges
Birth county London
Death year 1914
Death date 08/11/1914
Service number Ch/12852 (R.M.R.B./946.)
Rating Pte
Service R.M.L.I.
Ship/unit HMS Pembroke
Cause of death Died from disease.
Cemetery Walton Park (St Nicholas Cemetery) Rice Lane, Liverpool Lancs
Location of grave D/-/19a
Relatives notified Widow:- Eliza Florence, 35 Elsenham Road, Little Coates Grimsby.
Category Military, armed forces & conflict
Record collection First World War
Collections from Great Britain

Everything from the Death Date downwards appears to refer to this Marine but his date of birth appears to be 28 June 1874 and birthplace is somewhere in Lincolnshire. He enlisted in 1893 which is three years earlier than the date of birth they have given.

Does anybody have any idea what documents this entry has used to create this collection? I'm a bit mystified.

PS. I do have his burial and grave details, and Royal Marines Medal Roll, also that George John Clarke married Eliza Florence Harwood in Q4 1907 Grimsby.
She is visiting 77 Ling Street in 1911, the family of John and Violet Jones and their children Thomas and Violet Elizabeth. Born in 1884 she gives her place of birth as Unglebee, Lincolnshire. 93 Bold Street is a Savings Bank so may have been used as a contact address if she returned to Lincolnshire, although this is also the address given for George John's burial.

Don't have George himself in the 1911 census or 1901 - don't go wild searching for his whole family history, I know what you are like when you get the bit between your teeth :D as far back as 1901 is enough if it confirms his parents.

ADM is the reference for the Admiralty records. These records are made up of those who served in the Royal Navy and also the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Details here:-

These records are at the National Archives, but if I am correct are now available on FMP

Quite right they are on both Ancestry and Findmypast, however the ultimate source that both sites get them from is the National Archives.

It is the NA record that I want clarifying - where have they got that date and place of birth from?

I think Mary FMP and Ancestry will have transcribed what is in the record, but as we know they may have made a mistake. You need to consult the original to see what its says and they are at the NA.

That's what I've asked the NA about. Don't know how long it will be before they reply of course.
