Regimental Serjeant Major Duke-Canadians

I have a report in the Liverpool Echo 24th Feb 1916 of a Canadian Soldier who was reported to have Died of wounds in a Liverpool Hospital:-
Regimental Serjeant Major Duke, whi in his youth resided with his step-father, Mr. John May in Birkenhead, at several addresses, the last being in Bright Street, and who went to Canada 8 years ago, is reported to have died of wounds in a Liverpool hospital. He enlisted in the 16th Light Horsr (Canadians). Any information will gratefully be received by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Corden, 39, Lord Street, Birkenhead, or his aunt Mrs. Davies, 117, Bentinck Street, Birkenhead.
I can't find any entry on CWGC for anyone called Duke who served with the Canadians. Nor can I find a death registration.
This one is a bit confusing.
I located a marriage of a Robert Henry Duke to Margaret Anne Corden in 1902 in Birkenhead. According to a entry on Ancestry Robert's father is recorded as being John Alexander Duke
Robert Henry appears on a Liverpool Crew list in 1902 as Robert Henry Duke May.
There was a marriage in Birkenhead of a John May to a Ellen Jane Duke in 1886. I think I have located them on the 1891 census in Bury

If the soldier called Duke was the Step-son of John May this would out his birth date as being prior to the birth of Robert Henry Duke.
Any thoughts and help on this one.
