England called, and swift he answered.
Dear, brave laddie, good and true;
While he went with many a blessing.
And with smiles and tears too.
Rang the message from the trenches: "Steady boys, get ready, go!"
Did he hear his Great Commander calling "I have need of you?"

Yes! we dry our eyes and leave thee
Ever in his sheltered care;
Only just across the river; no more pain or parting there.
