John Hubbard's name is on the Chatham Naval Memorial, panel 17 [CWGC].

HMS Russell, built by Palmer & Co., Jarrow in 1901 and owned at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British battleship.
On April 27th, 1916, HMS Russell was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-73 (Gustav Sieß) at the entrance of Malta harbour. 124 persons were lost. She sank close enough to Malta for many small boats to get out to her to assist in the rescue of survivors. 625 were saved.
