Clearey Surname

Post by albertjbeaver »

Michael Clearey is my Great x2 Grandfather who from census and marriage certificate was born c1835 in Tipperary, Ireland. His father was Francis Clearey a Game Keeper.

Whilst searching for the birth record of my Great Grandfather James Clearey born c1864, (listed in census as born in Sheffield but no trace in local records), I noticed that there are a large number with the surname Clearey (or variation) listed in the census for 1871.

In conclusion, are there any others on the forum with a Clearey Surname branch in their family tree and could there be a link.

Thanks & Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum. You mention Ireland and Sheffield, can you please advise what connection the family has with Liverpool or Lancashire?

For the time being I have moved your post over to "Other Areas" until we establish where the research takes us.

My apogolgies

"I noticed that there are a large number with the surname Clearey (or variation) listed in the census for 1871."

I meant to add Liverpool to the end of this sentence.

Also I found a James Michael Cleary as part of my research born 1864 in the 1871 census.

Hi albertjbeaver,
RE:

Please post the census summary page reference for the above. If it is for the 1861 it will start with RG09 then Piece #, Folio # and Page#.

Also post the census information for the page which indicates your Great Grandfather James Clearey born c1864 was born in Sheffield.

There may be a Liverpool baptism relating to this birth that will tell you who the parents were. He could have been born on the way from Derbyshire to Sheffield.

Birth: CLEARY, James Michael
Registration district: Liverpool
Year of registration: 1865; Mar
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 54.

Their son Francis Patrick aka Frank was baptised in Derbyshire.

Register Office: Chesterfield
Reference: ASHB/12/287

Thank you for all the responses.

Yes RG10 - Piece: 4696 - Folio: 79 - Page: 33 is part of my family.

I have also come across

Birth: CLEARY, James Michael
Registration district: Liverpool
Year of registration: 1865; Mar
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 54.

Bu cannot find him listed in the Liverpool 1871 census – could he be the missing James Clearey and should I gamble on the birth certificate.

Alternatively should I look up the parish records?

As always not easy decisions in Family History Research.

You can 'gamble' but it would be a surer bet to specify the parents' names when applying to the GRO. The Reference Checking facility was withdrawn by the GRO some years ago but there is a work-around.

When you go to the GRO site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp and get to the 'Certificate choice' page, after ticking the relevant Birth or Marriage Cert box there's a question at the bottom asking whether the GRO reference is known. Tick the 'No' box and just enter the year of the birth you are interested in, even if you do know the Index Reference [Qtr, Volume and Page numbers, etc], don't enter anything else here.

The 'Delivery address details' page comes next, and after that a new page will open allowing you to enter the names of the parents including the mother's maiden name in the case of a birth cert application. The GRO will do a search 1 year either side of the given year. If they don't find the cert with the exact details you specified they will refund the full fee.
