This family seems a little odd as they only seem to show on the 1911 census. Finding them on the free index shows a probable sibling George who's 21. Mary 46 but absolutely no sign of them yet in 1901.

Hi Hilary,
I haven't found a fit for the family in 1901, hence my post.
This is the family in the 1911:
STACKHOUSE, Mary - Head - Widow - 46 - 1865 - Newcastle on Tyne, Durham.
STACKHOUSE, George - Son - u/m - 21 - 1890 - Clerk - Nottingham.
STACKHOUSE, Edward - Son - 8 - 1903 - School - Liverpool
Mary says married 24 years; 3 children born, 2 survived.

Spot on Hilary, that's the Edward I am chasing. I know he married Hannah Latimer.

And now the plot thickens..... If Wilding was his mother's maiden name where is the marriage? Thinks...... Oh not another one!

1891 census 41a Purilot St Pendleton
Arthur Wilding 40 bn Herefordshire
Mary wife 25 born NEWCASTLE
Gertrude daur 6 bn NOTTINGHAM (Hyson Green)
George son 4 born NOTTINGHAM (Hyson Green)

Then Sept Q 1903 Liverpool Reg District Gertrude Wilding marries John Stackhouse

I reckon Edward is perhaps her son not Mary's!

PS marriage is registrar attended or register office John as Stackhause on lancsbmd

Reckon I read Tithebarn wrong as that's the census I mean!!

Forgot to say there's a Mabel Stackhouse mother's maiden name Wilding born in 1914.

From the Probate Index

Henrbert Ambrose Thorn of 3 St Anthony's Road Blundellsands died 1 jan 1950 probate to Gertrude Thorn widow and Rosa Shone wife of Leonard Shone. Effects £41,125 0s 6d.

Should have said Herbert born 1872 from death index and this ties with the one in 1911 and he has a daughter Rosa. I wonder what his will said!!!!

Herbert Ambrose Thorn leaves a will to his wife Gertrude.

Beat me to it Hilary, sorry for the duplication.

Gertrude Frances Thorn otherwise Gertrude of South Road Waterloo died 12 August 1953 at Bootle Hospital probate to Mabel Howarth wife of Michael henry Howarth £1123 15s 1d

So she didn't get all of Herbert's estate!!

I wonder what happened to Mary and George/Percy in all this? Gertrude seems to have done OK. And what happened to John Stackhouse?

Arthur Wilding is alive in 1010ish boarding with Edward and Mary Ann Yarnold. He's 63 single and a general hawker. He dies 1917 death registered West Derby.

In 1881 he is in Wolverhampton so I reckon this could be his marriage

March Q 1882 Wolverhampton Arthur Wilding to Mary Hadfield vol 6b page 668

Thanks everyone for the efforts. The answer to my quest appears to given but why does Mary call herself, and presumably her own son George, Stackhouse in 1911 when she is really Wilding. Was she name-changing for a specific reason and not because she was simply careless to the extent of saying Edward bn 1903 is her son not her g.son?

I would appreciate any thoughts on the probable scenario(s).

She's hiding something!!

Edward is her grandson but his mother her daughter is elsewhere and his father her son in law can't be found. Her own husband is lodging elsewhere saying he's single. Did Edward always live with his hrandmother - the actual marriage certificate would be useful. Perhaps someone would look it up for you at the Record Office.

perhaps money was owed as Wilding!

I doubt we'll ever know.

Will you get Edward's birth certificate to check we've got it right?

Hilary,
The birth details you found are correct. The info fits with what I have been told. Edward married Hannah Latimer and had 5 children, 2 of whom are still alive. I agree there must have been some very odd goings on with that family around 1911 that we will never know about.

His father's name was a hurdle I had to cross before advancing backwards into his line!

TVM everyone!
