The Aspinwall Family

Post by Kate_Aspinwall »

I have started to look for my husband Pete's family on his behalf. His father James (b.18/12/1905) never talked about his family with his son, who thought his father had just one sister, Auntie Millie, and no other close relatives. What I have found is that James had four siblings,
Alice (c.15/11/1899)
Amelia (c.23/5/1901, the known aunt)
Florence (c.12/3/1903) and
William born we think about 1908, presumed died in childhood but thus far still seeking his whereabouts.
His parents were James Aspinwall and Amelia nee Morris (m.1898, All Saints, certificate awaited)

The revelation was that James Snr was married before to Elizabeth Mary nee Gaskell in 1877 at St Nicholas, Liverpool and had a "first family" all born in Walton and Liverpool
Susannah (b 18/7/1877) married John Ellams 11/4/1897
Mary (b 1880) married Robert Whittle 1901
Richard (b 31/12/1881, d. before 1885)
John (b 22/2/1883) married Margaret ?Webster 1903, had two daughters Sarah Elizabeth and Eveline.
Richard (b.25/4/1885) married Mary Elizabeth and had two children Gladys 1906,(m. Harold France 1937) and Samuel James 1910 who married Lydia Daulby 1935
James (b. 1889, buried 6/1/1896).
The marriages are all speculative so far. Elizabeth Mary was buried in 1896 at St Peter and St Paul, in Ormskirk where she was born.
John and Richard lived with James and Amelia in 1901 census at 79 Salop Street, Kirkdale.

Is anyone in your group researching any of the names above and might be able to throw any light on the previously unknown family?

Thank you so much to all of you who helped me. I had no idea I could get certificates online - when I researched my own family the only way was to take yourself in person to the local office and look through the (handwritten) index!

Unfortunately I have already ordered this one, how may I get these online? Every search I do reveals new ways that .com's have found to make money from the unwary researcher.

If I can help with anything in this part of the world please let me know, I'm near Barnstaple in Devon.

Ancestry now has many Parish Registers for Lancashire and indeed many other counties available, it's always worth checking there first to see if the particular marriage/baptism or sometimes burial is available there before ordering. You can try and see what databases they hold for yourself as usually they have a two week free trial. You do need to enter debit/credit card details for this so remember to cancel the subscription before the two weeks is over if you don't want to continue with the subscription.

Can you tell us if you need more census entries and whether the information we have found is correct and we might be able to find more.

The information you have given me confirms what I had found by one "pay as you go" on findmypast. The marriage certificates are confirmation of what I could only suppose to be right before. The "Ameali" spelling of wife and daughter's names was what happens when the householder fills out the census form him/herself, as I know the daughter was called Millie perhaps her mother was too.

Incidentally, the unknown witness might possibly be Rotherham - from the online parish clerks there are some Gaskell children born in 1852-60 in Aughton/Halsall/Ormskirk whose mother's maiden name is listed as Rotherham.
Thanks again

Ameali = Amelia when people aren't very literate, nickname Millie, makes a lot of sense.

Was just following through to see if by any chance they were still living in the most recent census to see how many years they had been married but I don't think so.

1881 RG11; Piece: 3691; Folio: 33; Page: 60
same address as 1871, Richard 54 is now a general labourer, Alice 50 and only John 19, Works in Coal Yard is home out of the children.

1891 RG12; Piece: 2971; Folio: 86; Page: 4
moved to 37 Brasenose Road, Bootle
Richard 64 is a Machine Driver and Alice 59 Jam Maker.

1901 RG13; Piece: 3469; Folio: 52; Page: 26.
28 Howley Street, Kirkdale
Richard 75 Dock Labourer states he is "M"arried but Alice isn't there, a family called Appleton are boarding with him.

There is a 67 year old Alice Aspinall in the Walton on the Hill District Workhouse, "M"arried and Blind, that I suspect might be her RG13; Piece: 3457; Folio: 102; Page: 27

Trying both spellings the only marriage I can find for a Richard and Alice seems a little early, but perhaps there was an earlier child who died. Another problem seems to be his occupation, so I have no confidence in this marriage. Nevertheless you would have to confirm it by means of a birth certificate of one of the children, but just in case I will give the details.

13th January, 1851 St Nicholas
Richard Aspinwall Full age Bachelor Shoemaker Cropper Street
Father William Aspinwall, Blacksmith
Alice Turner Minor, Spinster Harford Street
Father James Turner, Joiner
Both signed their names
Witnesses Thomas William Slade and Margaret Aspinwall

I think this marriage might be right because of the birthplace given

Hi Mary
Thank you for the help - I had found the marriage but was deeply dubious about this because of the big gap before the first child. However, the census which I hadn't found does appear to confirm it is the right one.

Registering for the 2 week trial on Ancestry was excellent advice, for which thanks again

Best wishes
Kate
