Hazlehurst conundrum

Post by Barbara B »

I've been looking back over some of my Hazlehursts and I seem to be getting tied in knots!
I have William Henry, born 1861 who married Ellen Griffith(s) in July-Sept. 1881. By 1891 William H is living with his parents and is recorded as married. In the 1901 and the most recent he is apparently the husband of a Margaret Hazlehurst who states they have been married for 13 years. Needless to say I can't find any marriage for them.
Ellen meanwhile is in the same two censuses with her daughters and is recorded as married. The only Ellen Hazlehurst in the 1891 census is a servant described as single.
To compound the mystery their eldest daughter, Jane seems to have two dates of birth - one of 1881 and the other, through her marriage certificate as 1877. I can't find a birth record in either year.
Not only that, the man she married, John Riley (Holy Trinity 1898) also disappears although he must have come home at least twice as there are two children from the marriage! They are recorded on the last two censuses.
I suspect William H just set up house with Margaret but I'd like to know what happened to John Riley.
Can anyone spot him?
Thanks in advance

I've tried under Griffith and Griffiths but come up with nothing.
There were other children of Ellen and William H. Ethel and her twin Daisy - Daisy died aged 7. I had Madelina but not Gilbert. I suspect he may have died as well.

Hi Bertie. Where did you get the military info from? I hadn't thought of that.
Erika, yes that's the one I meant. Another little mystery there - who's William Hazlehurst's mother?? Maybe Gilbert didn't die. Going to check up now.

Not sure if 2 William Henry's getting confused... there is one born 1858, and one 1860.

There is a baptism Aug 1879 of William Henry to William and Margaret, William is a Chimney sweep. This child may be the death I found in 1881/

Not sure if you are wanting more info on Gilbert, but he is on the 1911, although his wife Mary Jane isn't with him at the address.
He has 2 children
Marjorie 5
James 1
They are living at 28 Fairclough Lane and he is a Bill poster, for a theatre I think.

Marriage was in Mar qtr 1904 Toxteth Park to Mary Jane Livesley

There is also a birth in Sep qtr 1902 for William Henry Hazlehurst ( grandson )
Liverpool 8b 133. Still no idea who the mother was, maybe one of Ellen's unmarried daughters, Madeline or Ethel?

Thanks Bertie, Erika and Simone for all the info.
I'll have a look at John Riley today Bertie.
Simone, I'm sure Helen and Ellen are the same person in the 1891. It's too much of a coincidence. Wonder how she's managing to live on her own means? And where's Gilbert?
I can't make my mind up about the William H entry in the 1891 - all the other unmarried are marked 'S' but I agree it's a bit ambiguous.
Thanks Erika for the update on Gilbert - it's nice to know there may be a couple of Hazlehurst descendants out there somewhere.
Another small step forward - or should that be backwards?

That's the family, Bertie. Philip is recorded as a bootmaker on John and Jane's marriage certificate. He is also recorded as deceased in 1898, the year of the marriage. I have found a John Riley with a mother, Nargaret in the 1891 so I'll have a closer look at that.
Thank you once again
