Hi.
Quite a few of my ancestors with the surname 'Gordon' have worked at Tate and Lyle over the years. I wonder if anyone knows of employee records that may be available so I could find out more about what they did?
Also, does anyone have any recollection of a Wiliam Gordon - I knew him as 'Bill' but I think he may have been known as 'Willie' to others. He lived in Anfield, never married, used to visit the Cabbage Hall pub every night except Thursday (bath night!) and worked at T&L for most if not all of his working life. He took ill while at T&L in 1970, was admitted to hospital and died quite suddenly not long before his due retirement. Do any of these details ring any bells with anyone?

Re: Tate & Lyle and Gordons
Just tried a search of the new (to me) Record Office Catalogue http://138.253.72.27/liverpool_in_print/ and found that there are quite a number of records held there, including the history of the company and the Tate & Lyle Times and details of a Prosperity Sharing Scheme.
If there are any employee records it would seem that they may have been deposited at the Record Office so this would be the place to begin your search, but hopefully some of the other documents will also be of interest.

Re: Tate & Lyle and Gordons
Thanks for all your help, folks. Sadly the death did refer to my uncle.
I'd still love to hear from anyone who might have known him or known of him through relatives. He was certainly working at Tate and Lyles in the 1960s and I'm sure I met someone many years ago who said they had worked with him and that he was quite a ladies' man! Ring any bells?
He also used to visit the Cabbage Hall (Hotel?) in Liverpool every night apart from Thursday, which was his bath night!
Regards,
Glen

Cheers, Tina. I'm obviously looking for an ancestor who was perhaps a bit of a drunken philanderer! Could be an interesting search!
