Herbert Atkinson Bicycle Shop Liverpool

Post by loudoniii »

I am seeking any information on a Herbert Atkinson, believed to have run a Bicycle Shop or Bicycle Repair Shop in Liverpool in the 1950's or 1960's. Herbert is believed to have been born around 1930 in England, possibly also in Liverpool, though this is not sure. Herbert had 2 brothers, Walter (Wally) Atkinson, and a Merchant Seaman brother, Roderick Reed Atkinson. Any information on Herbert or his brothers would be much appreciated.

Hi Bertie! Thanks very much for the input. This is the one and only record on Roderick Reed Atkinson that I have been able to find online anywhere in the world! I am going to the National Archives in Kew today to see if I can get access to Roderick's Merchant Navy and find out any details of home address, etc, so I can attempt to find Herbert and Wally, his brothers. Best wishes, Paul

Nothing in BMD's for Roderick. I had hoped Reed may have been his mother's maiden name.
Lots of births for Walter and Herbert 1929 to 1939 nothing near Lpool.
We need someone with a 50's directory.

Roderick's proposed address on arrival, 1948, see above, was Plymsole House, Liverpool.
Was there such a place?
On a more neutical theme, he, being a seaman, was there a Plimsoll House where mariners headed for?

Hi Bertie - Good intuition!! I've discovered that Plimsoll House was a Merchant Seaman's Hostel in Liverpool, hence the address... not RRA's home address of course, but a logical place for him to stay. Thanks to you for your assistance.

Trying to find a connection via their births, and indeed their birth dates, without success so far. Do you have any other information... names of parents, spouses or other relatives. The slightest snippet could be very useful. Did Herbert or Walter have a second forename or initial and was Wally older or younger than Herbert, for instance?

Bert, this is interesting from the doc you found..
Besides his Discharge number - R361775.....
ATKINSON R R 03/04/1927 CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA

Looks as though Roderick Reed Atkinson could have been born in South Africa on 3rd April 1927. Loudon should have a crack at seeing the full document and hopefully a full MN record. Would explain why there's no sign of his birth in the GRO Indices.

And I have compared all Herbert and Walter Atkinson births in England and Wales from 1922 to 1935 without finding a matching maiden name for the mother. Having a second look at the lists now.

Thanks DS,

I had a google,

I am looking for any information on Roderick Read Atkinson, born on 3 Apr 1929 in England, married Martha Maria Vermeulen in Cape Town, South Africa in 1954, where they settled down and raised a family. Roderick died on 9 Jun 1983, believed to be in South Africa. Roderick was a member of the Merchant Navy, travelling on various ships, including the RMS Arundel Castle, voyaging from Port Said, Egypt to Southampton, England in 1947. Cannot find any details of Roderick's parentage or place of birth, so any input would be much appreciated.

Bert,
Check out this..... http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/20533/help- ... 29-england
Have to wait for a comment from Louden. We seem to be duplicating efforts and finding stuff he already knows.

There isn't a birth or a marriage recorded in England or Wales for a Roderick Atkinson between 1875 and 1930.

I agree DS,

Perhaps we should introduce Loudon to our Pills. He probably needs them. :)

A query for you Bert... That incoming passenger list from the Arundel Castle.... Are the letters DBS associated anywhere with the entry for Roderick Atkinson? Means 'Distressed British Seaman', in other words an MN man without a work job on a vessel, perhaps laid off or stranded in a foreign port.

Bert...
Found this:
http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=50863

A comment in the thread appears to confirm that Roderick Read Atkinson was born in SA. In that case his siblings were probably born there as well, and that is where their births should be researched, not England.

Sorry guys if you have been duplicating research, I do wish posters would let us know just what they have got, especially when requests on other forums are so recent too.
