Marriage Search - Ennis/Parle

Post by MaryA »

I don't quite know whether to post here in Liverpool or other places, so will try here as it's more likely than Ireland - yes I have checked the Irish records as well.

My grandmother's sister Alice Parle, was born in Liverpool in 1874, the family returned to Ireland when she was a child, and then returned to Liverpool I believe with other siblings, definitely with Catherine, probably with John, Robert, Nicholas, Annie, maybe with William but as he was much older maybe he remained here, however they all ended up back in Liverpool.

Catherine married Francis Louis Longford in Liverpool in 1896 so I believe they were here by that date.

From the 1901 and 1911 censuses William Joseph Ennis was born in Ireland about 1876. He and Alice Parle had children beginning with Robert William on 23 May 1896 and apparently continuing until Florence 20 August, 1917, poor woman, all born Liverpool except for Vincent Q2 1900 in Halifax (d 1902 Liverpool).

As the eldest child was baptised in St Alphonsus, Kirkdale and the family were strong Catholics, I would imagine that the couple married in an RC church but can I find the marriage? Any help would be appreciated.

If you have any queries I'll be back later this afternoon.
Thanks
MaryA

They moved around the churches! Ellen Josephine was christened in St Anthony in 1897 and John at St Joseph in 1898.

Hi MaryA,
Despite the entry in the 1910+1 that they had been married 16 years, the only marriage I can find in any region covered by the GRO for a William J and an Alice is this one:
William J Ennis married Alice Burgess
Registration district: Liverpool South
Year of registration: 1936; Jun qtr
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 276

If both were single before they had children and were both RC, it is inconceivable that they didn't marry... unless one of them was already married.

I would be very surprised if they weren't married ..... mind you her sister is the one who turned out to be the bigamist  so what do I know?

Strangely I had a dekko at LancsBMD to see if there was a church named for the 1936 marriage and there is another one listed for the same year, obviously not the one in Liverpool South anyway, but I suspect not mine, however it might just be worth checking out when the Record Office is open.
ENNIS William MCMILLAN Alice Everton, St. Chrysostom

Now apart from their own 1911 census entry, her father's was the one in which he listed all his children by mistake - Robert Parle, 73, living 15 Higham Street, Everton and he also marks Alice as being married, so he obviously thought so too.

Bert, I know you wouldn't ignore me :D
Hilary, I suspect they moved from one lodging to another also not just around the churches.
