David,
There are 3 images on Findmypast available for the son's enlistment. None mention a next of kin.
Name: John COWLEY; bn 1874, Liverpool.
Enlisted in Loyal North Lancashire Regiment - 47th & 81st Foot
Re the Royal Irish Fusiliers? The home address on enlistment in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was 6 Arnot Street, Walton, Liverpool. Where did you find the reference to the Fusiliers? Is this the man you have as your John Cowley?

John jnr has papers on Ancestry. He joined the Royal irish Fusiliers in May 1898 having previously been in the militia from 1895. His mother Mary Jane Cowley of 49 Milbourne St Liverpool is given as next of kin. He married Alice Louisa Allen in 1906.
Just as a point of interest my father's Army papers give his next of kin as his mother although his father was still living.
The info on your mum is very helpful I was relying on John Jr's father being absent on the army docs as being dead but if it was like your case John Jrs mum was on the papers perhaps John Sr was still alive.
Alfred was the last born as far as I can tell, Mary filled in the 1911 census incorrectly and declares she lost 2 children, she was a widow in 1901, it looks like John died between 1892 and 1898 as you always thought, the only death in Liverpool that's a near fit is that Liverpool reg posted earlier, doesn't help with the burial, knowing some addresses, perhaps knowing when he left the electoral roll would help with finding a date of death.
Looking at possible cemeteries Anfield would be a good candidate for the place of burial. At the moment the Liverpool Record Office is closed other libraries in the Merseyside area may have access to copies of the burial records. Having the date of death from the death certificate would make the burial easier to find. Burial records for Anfield are currently being transcribed here:-
Hi David, This might not help but worth a suggestion. I live in Scotland and our local council has a Department of Parks & Cemetries. I emailed them with the suggested year of death, with as much info as I had i.e. next of kin, as the person who would probably organise the funeral/buriel and they emailed me back with the cemetry they were buried in, when, plot number and who paid for the plot. Might be worth checking if the local council has such a department.
I think Liverpool City Council still charge a tenner per cemetery per year but for a burial from the 1890s they would likely refer enquirers to the Liverpool Record Office.
