Okay, this is a very long shot, but I'm going for it.

I am looking for an H. Beeley, resident L&SWL area, 1908/1909.

It's not known whether this person is male or female - I don't know which part of the region, how old, etc. :shrug: As I say, a very long shot - but any input gratefully received.

Cheers, Bert. They would appear to be at Higher Parr Street, St. Helens, 1901. Not ringing any bells just yet - I don't know if it's the right Beeleys.

Don't think it can be. This 'H. Beeley' would be twelve years old at that time.

Bert, by way of some explanation, it's an inscription in a book that's in the family - the handwriting looks quite mature. I imagined the writer to be older, anyway. I feel there is a link to my family somewhere.

That's unfortunately it. A stab in the dark, but I keep going back to this signature.

Who's book was it, name of book, adult or child reading, where did the owner of the book live.

It's a Bible.

It's been handed down through the generations, so it has belonged to a number of people in the family over the last hundred years or so. The family are from Prescot originally but then scattered all over the country. It's more than complicated.

I suppose I am looking for a name, a place, that is familiar.

In the 1910+1 there are 18 H* Beeleys in Lancashire with ages ranging from 2 to 36. Only one is near St Helens and he's the Henry bn 1897 that Bert found.

In 1901 there are 17, with ages from 0 to 61 [Hannah], only one near St H is Henry as above. The Beeleys seem to be predominantly from around Ashton under Lyne.

I noticed that. Maybe I need to cast the net further.

Of course, I could be barking up the wrong tree. The name may not be anything to do with our family at all. A Bible just seems a very personal sort of thing to gift to someone. It doesn't tie in with any baptisms or confirmations anywhere.

What is actually reads is "H. Beeley, Christmas 1908". It doesn't say 'from', although that is the assumption, that it was a gift at Christmas from 'H'.

It could even have been second-hand. It's so fragile now I'm afraid to handle it.

I would look at as H Heeley wrote in his book Christmas 1908 ie that was when he received it.

No, most definitely Beeley. Beesley, as you say, is a fairly common name.

Having taken the book out from its container and studied it again, it does say 'from'. I was confusing with another book and another inscription .

If H Beeley wrote it, then you would think he or she was an older person?
1908 perhaps over 25yrs old, an Uncle/Aunt maybe?
There's an H Beeley, unusual name, aged 32 1882, blacksmith going to Quebec Canada in 27.5.1914 aboard the Victorian dep Lpool.

I dont if this will help but my great aunt hilda beeley, she lived in stockport i'm pretty sure all her life with her brother Roy. she was highly religious i suppose as most people were in those days, she died in the mid 90s, in her late eighties, which would make her very young in 1908, but i saw the sample of the hand writing on one of the other posts and is very similar to some of the writing i got in christmas cards as a kid. hope this helps
