hi folk need your brains once again looking into the mother of one of my inlaws . trouble is she was from HAMBURG ,germany . no record of fathers name . before I buy a copy of her marriage cert , any other avenues .
FACTS SO FAR. helga greta rehders ,born 10.11.1928 germany mothers name wilheminea . helga married peter campbell in liverpool 1949 , at the FRIARY chuch which I think is st. mary of the angels . she was lutherian peter was catholic . can`t trace her immigration to this country though she is said to have come here with peter campbell , so it must have been 1948/9 , he was in the 8th army . helga died in 1990. peter was born on 30.12.1916. I`d be greatful for any help . many thanks .

It's too recent to be online so I would get the certificate. The German line may be difficult I got my German information from other researchers who had a German passport from the 1850s translated into English and did research in Germany.

hi . yes it has been a bit of a nightmere trying to get into german records , but can`t understand why I can`t find any immigration info ? thanks for your interest.

She probably arrived on a ferry and they didn't as far as I know keep passenger lists. If she applied to be naturalised her papers may be in the National Archives.

would you need to be nationalised if you married an english man ?

One of my Nan's husbands was in the army in WW2 and brought back a Belgian woman who he married in 1951. I've never found any record of her coming into the country.

There don't appear to be any online records for Hamburg. Our people were from a village in the region of Hessen so it was easier for the person who gave me copies of records he contacted the local authories and they found our ancestors in the church books.

It might be more difficult with Hamburg as it's a city. You need to try to find contact details for the Hamburg authorities. It might be a good idea to send them an e-mail in German using simple language translated into German using an automatic English to German translater.

hi . still banging my head over this one ! the german site sent me a link to the library archives but I just kept hitting a brick wall the same with st,mary`s records. guess I might have to concede defeat over this one ?

Never admit defeat, even if it only goes on the back burner for the time being, something will pop up unexpectedly one day. Meantime I expect you will find St Mary's records at the Record Office when it reopens in May.

HI .folks payed ot for helgas marriage cert , she was married at st.marys of the angels 5/7/1949. father heinrich holting rehders. looks like she didn`t get nationalised till 70`s( according to her son ,never had a passport ) . so it`s all up to the german sites now . thanks for your help .lemondog
