Worth putting in the list of possibles....?

Thinking George Miller might have been Elizabeth Sim's father and her YoB is consistently 1801 I did a George Miller search on Scotland's People [1800 - 1802] without a single hit. So, following Hilary's suggestion, I tried Millar and got just one hit. I had a spare credit and couldn't resist the temptation.....

29/11/1801 - MILLAR, ELIZABETH;
Parents: GEORGE MILLAR/SUSANAH GARTSHORE [FRCH2V19 sic] - FALKIRK/STIRLING - SGRO ref: 479/00 0050 0000

I don't mind using a credit or two when the curiosity overcomes me. And I do sometimes wonder about the wisdom of having a lot of unused credits sitting up there [anywhere] as I reach the 4 score mark! :lol: :lol:

Interesting find Bert. Wonder if this could be the witness at Elizabeth's marriage, we thought might be her brother?

Hi DS,

The signature of George Miller on the marriage cert in my opinion would rule out a 12 year old, I think its more adult. It does however look like Miller, as does Elizabeth's signature, which may clear up at least how they spelt the name.
Perhaps Mary will put it up for all to see, thanks in advance Mary.

Maybe we should look for a George Miller born in Scotland living in Manchester. If we could find a burial or marriage depending on whether it is her father or brother it might help.

I find it's not unusual for a parent to be a witness, sometimes I think it's rather nice as it must mean that they are happy with the choice of their offspring, like showing approval.

I had a quick peep this morning and couldn't wait to get over our Saturday sport commitments. There is certainly a large amount to follow up. And I also thank DS for using your credit; agreed that was very kind (mine seem to have expired...for now). Thank you also Mary for the upload of the marriage certificate. I got a copy of that in about 1996 and I could hardily read the streaky copy, so I am very pleased to have such a clean copy now. My first reaction was that the writing all looked the same, except for Robert Wilton, the witness, but that wouldn't make sense given the William Simms has signed as William Sim. The Elizabeth and George Miller also looked very similar, but I suppose father and daughter may write/sign the same way? It has made me think that I need to recheck a lot of my earlier research, which was off microfiche. The Millar possibility (particularly when you see Simms and Sim on the same doc!!) is quite exciting and I have tracked down quite a bit about that family from familysearch, but I suppose I need to work harder to ensure that this is my Elizabeth Miller. It was mentioned that I should also track down more details of the family in Manchester in or around 1825, which may give me a lead. But the work that you all have kindly done, has given me enough to rewrite my very early history of the Sim Family plus given me plenty of leads. Cheers Michael

Hello Michael,
Just a comment about that marriage cert. Given that William signed himself as Sim, in my opinion the Simms name is probably a mistake by whoever completed the main body of the form. I believe that Simms was probably a far more common name in Manchester than Sim and it should be considered as a red herring.
Good hunting!
