Death of Mary Maddox - early 1800s

Post by Gwebb1 »

Help! I am struggling to find the death record for Mary Maddox which I need in order to clarify her date of birth and parents.

She was born in the 1750s (Mary Connah) in Flintshire and married Robert Maddox in 1774 in Hawarden. They then moved to Liverpool where all their children were baptised at St Nicholas's. I think their last child was born in late 1806 and Robert died in 1827 but the record does not so whether he was a widower or not.

Spellings of the surname vary - Maddox, Maddockes, Maddock etc.

I think I have looked in all the obvious places but am struggling to track her down.

Anyone with eagle eyes able to help?

Regards,
Glen

Free BMD has 3, Mary Maddox,
1837, Liverpool, Vol 20 Page 222,
1838, Liverpool, Vol 20 Page 341, Vol 20 Page 290

The above may fall into a more acceptable age range rather than 2 others that died about 10 years later in Liverpool.

Thanks, Bert.

I'd followed up 2 from 1837 but they turned out to be children.
I'd foolishly been focusing on the parish records rather than the BMD - talk about not seeing the wood for the trees! - and the 1838 death did not appear there. Just went back in to check and I noticed another one for 1840.
Better get ordering.

Thanks again - proves that 4 eyes are better than 2!

Don't order blindly, indexes at that date don't give ages, but I assume the certificates do, make sure you state on your order her date of birth, they shouldn't send you one for a child then, but refund your money.

At those dates, or even prior to 1837, I think checking for MI's, gravestones might prove better, check out the likes of this site http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/ and others such as St James cemetery, to see if there is an entry for her.

Ignore an entry in St James for Mary MADDOCK who died 31st July 1833 as she was only 21 years old.

Thanks, Mary - I've only used the Mersey Times occasionally in the past and did not apprectiate until I followed your link just how extensive it was. I'll certainly be making more use of it in the future.

The 1840 death (which I found when looking for Bert's 1838 one) seems worth a punt, however. I found it on the On-line Parish Clerk's Project and it gave Mary's age at death as being 81. One of the baptisms I was considering was 1759 which would obviously correlate but would mean she was 15 when she married in 1774. I'm back to my young marriages again, which I have referred to in another post.

I'll add another post if it proves a successful punt.

Actually I won't order the certificate as I can't find a GRO number!

There is a record of burial (15 Dec 1840), her address (Netherfield Rd), her age (82) and where she was buried (St Georges) but no reference to a death certificate?

Not come across this before - any ideas?

Glen,

Age at death may not be that accurate, depending who registered the death, so could be out by a few years.

Dead end anyway (no pun intended) - further exploration found that there was a spinster called Mary Maddock born 1758 and the death seems to have referred to her.
I'm beginning to think there is a spelling error or something and that is why I can't find her.

The search goes on!
