Thomas Finn, Toxteth

Post by sarahpeat »

Hello,

I am trying to figure out which Thomas Finn (of several) is the one I’m after. I know he lived in Toxeth but the only other concrete information I have is on his daughter, Mary Finn (dress maker).

Thomas is listed on the 1902 marriage certificate of his daughter Mary Finn as a labourer. Mary was born in 1880 or 1881 at 87 Beaufort Street, Toxteth. She may have had a sister called Eleanor born around 1886.

If anyone has any suggestions about how to track down the correct Thomas Finn (I’d like to find out more about him and also who he married) I’d be very grateful.

Many thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Given the address you have on that birth cert, this is certain to be the Thomas you are after. He is in the household of the Scott family, whose daughter Mary appears to be married to Thomas.

Census 1881:
SCOTT, Abraham - Head - Married - 52 - 1829 - Mariner - Liverpool.
SCOTT, Maria - Wife - 42 - 1839 - Bootbinder - Ireland.
plus several children including..
FINN, Mary - Dtr - Married - 24 - 1857 - Domestic Servant - Liverpool.
and
FINN, Thomas - Son-in-law - Married - 26 - 1855 - Dock Labourer - Wigan, Lancashire.
FINN, Mary - Grand Dtr - U/m - 0 - 1881 - Liverpool.
Address: 87 Beaufort St, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
RG number: RG11 / Piece:3637 / Folio:8 / Page:13.

Marriages Dec 1879> FINN, Thomas and SCOTT, Mary - West Derby - 8b - 653.

Thanks for that. One thing I forgot to include is that Mary Finn married Walter McCrossan (cook) in 1902.

Best,

This is fantastic information - thank-you. I'm new to all this so your info is extremely helpful.

Do you know whether there are records of who arrived in Liverpool from Ireland (i.e. once I've sorted out this generation you've given me info on, I'd like to see what I can find on Maria Scott, boot binder, from Ireland - I guess I'll need to see if there's anything at the Maritime Museum archives but any idea where to find her maiden name or do I need to order marriage cert's to find this out?

Cheers and thanks again,
Sarah

Unfortunately there are no records of those who immigrated from Ireland since it was more like jumping a bus into town. Looking on censuses to see if she gives a better birthplace might help, or at the very least trying to establish her maiden name from birth certificates of the children and see what clues can be gleaned from her marriage certificate. So working on backwards, in 1871
1 House, 13 Court, Mann Street, Toxteth Park
All born Lancashire Liverpool except Maria
Abraham Scott Head M 39 Ship's Rigger
Maria Wife M 37 Boot Binder Ireland
Sarah daur Unm 18
Abraham Son 17 Seaman Unemployed
Mary daur 14 Scholar
Catherine daur 9 "
Maria daur 12 "
William son 11 "

Mary, thank-you for this.

I've just had a close look at the information and would like to ask your opinion. In the 1871 census which you quote, Maria Scott has an 18 year old daughter (Sarah). But Maria would only be about 30/31 at the time of this census. So that would mean she was 13 at the time her daughter was born. Do you think this is right? (I checked on free BMD and there is a marriage in Liverpool of an Abraham Scott in 1883, so it could fit.) Or could it be that this was a second marriage for Abraham and Sarah was a daughter from the original marriage. Thanks, Sarah

1851
20 Brick Street, St Thomas, Liverpool
All born Ireland
James Jackson Head M 53 Shoemaker
Mary Wife M 47
Maria daur 20 Boot Binder
HO107; Piece: 2181; Folio: 877; Page: 62

Sorry I missed inserting the age of Maria when entering the 1871 census. (amended now) Her age does seem to bob about a bit, but she may be old enough to have Sarah, especially in view of the date of the marriage.

Puzzles me where the other two children are .... unless I have the wrong family

My name is Barbara and I am a maternal Great Grandaughter of Thomas Finn. His daughter Elizabeth/Eliza married Frank Chadwick Kelly, they had twin daughters, Margaret & Joyce. Joyce was my mother.
I was attempting to contact Sarah Peat as it would be fabulous to hear from a relation.

Fingers crossed :-)
