Hi All, First time user. After reading the 1911 census I found out that my Grandfather George Alfred Edwards was a licenced hotelier. I was wondering if there was some way that I could find out what hotel he had. I live in Australia so I must be able to look up records online.
Many Thanks
Monica

Re: Licenced hotelier liverpool
Hi and welcome to the forum.
There is one of our forum members who has, I believe, a directory of licenced victuallers, also there are various other directories held by some of us which we could perhaps look up for you. Also some available online.
First of all could you please give us the address you have found and perhaps also the reference of the census so that we can try to assist.

Re: Licenced hotelier liverpool
The 1909 City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book has George Alfred Edwards as tied tenant/licensee of Bents Brewery Co at 18 Hall Lane, (Majestic Hotel). It had 6 rooms for domestic purposes, two licensees since 1 Jan 1900, and a billiard room with one table on first floor. It had 2 entrances in Hall Lane and, as Tina said, one in Binney Street.
There is no illustration of that pub in Freddy O'Connor's 'A Pub on Every Corner' - Vol 1, City Centre, but it might be in another volume. I am not sure which covers the Kensington area. Most of that area has been swept away and I do not think any of its pubs have survived.

After reading this thread I did a bit of a search & found this site:
http://www.liverpoolpicturebook.com/p/l6-l7.html
Mostly pics taken in/around 1968, showing amongst other things old liverpool streets & some of the devistated areas.
should give you an Idea of how liverpool was.

I think we've done excellently between the lot of us, especially Daggers for pinpointing the name of the pub too.Tina wrote: Mary, great reply.
It's ok Monica, take no notice of us, we do have a mutual admiration society when we do well.

Re: Licenced hotelier liverpool
Thanks for a mention in dispatches, Mary.
I think that the Kensington area may be covered by vol.4 of 'A Pub on every Corner' which I do not have, and which appears to be out of print. Has anyone got a copy?

Re: Licenced hotelier liverpool
Many Thanks, I really do not have any information as to where the pub was situated. The 1911 census RG 14 piece 22584 had him and his family living at 18 Hall Lane,. He was born in 1854 in Liverpool. My Father was the youngest son George Stanislaus and he emigrated to Australia shortly after this.
In 1933 on my Grandmothers probate, it has George Alfred as being a retired Victualler. Sorry I can't be of much help.
With many thanks
Monica
