Re: Toxteth Park - Brown Family
I suspect you have the baptism for Dorothy but in case you haven't it was on 7th April 1895 at St John the Baptist, Toxteth Park, Dorothy Muriel Brown, parents William Burkett and Elizabeth Brown, of 12 Toxteth Street, father's occupation Hydraulic Man. There is no birthdate given.
There is also a May Brown baptised in St James Toxteth, on 17 May 1878, parents William and Elizabeth, of 65 Park Hill Road and his occupation is Engineer, could this be the same parents?
To fill in a little of the gap
Margaret Ann Brown baptised 12 November 1888 at St Gabriel, Toxteth Park, parents William Birkett and Elizabeth Brown. 17 Tamworth Street, occupation Labourer. I would have doubted it was the same couple with such a change in occupation but the middle name seems suspicious.
To go back earlier, is this your William? born 1st November 1883, baptised 3 January, 1884 St Paul Princes Park, both William and father William have a middle name "Burkhill", 12 Tamworth Street, occupation Labourer.

Re: Toxteth Park - Brown Family
Going back through the censuses he does seem to have been a Hydraulic Labourer or a General Labourer so it could be him.
I was wondering if there was an older daughter whose child Dorothy might have been, it wouldn't be unknown for parents to bring up their grandchild as their own when faced with a daughter's unmarried pregnancy.
In 1911 Elizabeth claims to have had 7 children, one died.

Re: Toxteth Park - Brown Family
Have you checked the marriage to see if either was widowed before they married? I'm assuming the marriage is to Elizabeth Langley in 1877 at St. Michael in the City but that's obviously just a guess.

That was my guess as well.Mary A wrote:Have you checked the marriage to see if either was widowed before they married? I'm assuming the marriage is to Elizabeth Langley in 1877 at St. Michael in the City but that's obviously just a guess.
Thanks for the info.
Some I hadn't found.
I also made the assumption for now that Elizabeth, mother of William B was named Burkett before she married.
have yet to check that one.
for those that remember my search for my grandfathers parents - this is my grandmothers family

Re: Toxteth Park - Brown Family
So counting Margaret (1888) that makes Elizabeth's seven, still leaving a bit of a gap but perhaps Dorothy was an unexpected surprise. If she was a grandchild being brought up by them, I suspect you will never know, as the baptism gave William B and Elizabeth as parents, the likelihood is that they registered the birth also.
I think your next step has to be a certificate of one of the children to confirm the mother's maiden name before you take Langley for granted. The marriage certificate will be easier as it will be on microfilm at the Record Office.

Re: Toxteth Park - Brown Family
Sorry to say that St Michaels, Upper Pitt Street was bombed in WWII and so their records, held at the Record Office, go up to only 1835.
You need to order this marriage certificate from either the Liverpool Register Office or the GRO.
Best make sure it is correct with a birth certificate before you spend out on it.
