With the help of the "Roll of Honour" for Ralph Alfred Shepherd who died on the Lusitania I have been able after searching FreeBMD to find the following,

Ralph Alfred Shepherd (my grandfathers elder brother) married Hannah Margaret Boylan Dec qtr 1898 West Derby 8b 1013 and had the following children who are listed on the 1911 census for 8 Empire Road Liverpool. Some variation exists regarding spelling etc.

Shepherd Alfred Henry Dec qtr 1899 West Derby 8b ???
Shepherd Ralph March qtr 1902 West Derby 8b 269
Shepherd Teresa Winifred March qtr 1904 West Derby 8b 273
Shepherd Francis March qtr 1908 West Derby 8b 269
Shepherd Mary Agnes March qtr 1910 West Derby 8b 263

I have endeavoured to search for deaths/marriages for each of the named above but have been unable to find anything, whilst they obviously died maybe non of them ever married. Am I missing something again?

I am looking for potential cousins, prior to finding details of my grandfathers siblings from the 1891 census at 3 Brookhill Road Bootle I had no knowledge from my grandfather/father/aunts/uncles that they existed.

Can anyone please apply some lateral thinking on the subject?

Best Regards
Allan

Just had a brain storm!!

Found a Alfred H Shepherd died Sept qtr 1957 aged 57 and a Ralph J Shepherd died March qtr 1969 aged 67 which would tie in with their birth years.

Also found two marriages for a Alfred H Shepherd during Sept qtr 1927 and 1928, will have to get certs to confirm which one applicable.

Also found marriages for Ralph J in 1932, Teresa in 1932 and Agnes M in 1928.

Will let you know how I progress.

Best Regards
Allan

Hi Allan,

Birth confirmed: SHEPHERD, Alfred Henry
Registration district: West Derby, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1899; Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 370A

This is the closest match I found, England [all counties]. Quite possible for the age at death to be out by a year or two...
Death: SHEPHERD, Alfred H
Registration district: Bootle (Lancashire)
Year of registration: 1957; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 57
Volume no: 10B; Page no: 596

Two possible marriages.....
1927: SHEPHERD, Alfred H & McManus, Mary - W.Derby 8b 1049
1928: SHEPHERD, Alfred H & Jones, Elizabeth V - W. Derby 8b 1235

You can get the GRO to search for a match by not entering the Volume or Page references. Tick NO where the form asks if the references are known and just give 1927 as the year. This will allow you to specify the father's name and the GRO will search 1 year either side of 1927 so the 1928 event will be included. If they don't find a match they will refund your £9.25 in full.

Don't need to buy two certs! Check my previous post for the way to do it.

I think there were 2 more children Charles 1912 and Margaret 1914

I looked on http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk for possible marriages

Alfred Henry to Mary McManus 1927
Ralph J to Sarah Ward 1932
Teresa to Peter Lovelady 1932

All the above West Derby Reg Office or reg attended so could be RC

Francis to Mary Mattocks 1937 South Sefton Reg Office or Reg attended this would cover the Bootle area
Mary Agnes to Wilfrid H Lawson 1934 Christ Church Bootle
Margaret to John Parker 1942 South Sefton Reg office or reg attended

If you know the likely family church I'd find where their records are and go and have a nose at them

There is a death reg for a Teresa Winifred Lovelady born 26 Jan 1904 died Dec 1983 Liverpool so the marriage I found could be right. The couple would appear to have had some children.

Someone on Ancestry has a tree with Francis on it showing that he married Frances Mary Eugene Mattocks in 1937 and that the couple had children. It would be worth contacting the tree holder as they are probably a relation.

With a bit of luck you will soon be at the stage to start tracking down living cousins. As it is policy not to post info about living people on the forum I suggest using the online Electoral Rolls. I use http://tracegenie.com/ for this. They don't ask you to buy credits to search the Rolls, instead you buy online time. For just £3.50 you get 24 hours continous access to the ERs from 2000 to 2013. The site has an 'age decade' filter which helps to narrow down the search. But, 'continuous' means just that... log off the site and you lose any unused time.

Hi dickiesam

Many thanks for the link with tracegenie.

Hi Hilary

I have accessed Ancestry and found the entry for Francis Joseph Shepherd, daft question but how do I contact the tree holder with "member connect" as it appears to be very long winded? Tried clicking on various in "Community" but no luck!!

Hi Allan,

Hilary might have a different method, all I normally do is click on tree owners name and send PM and hope they still log on.

Hi Allan,

Ancestry has internal messaging, if you're not a member, it can't be done.

If you have a subscription make sure you are logged/signed in when you try and contact the tree holder.

Hello Hilary

Contacted Ancestry and they inform me that you do have to have a subscription account to use the member connect, the freebie at the library does not have this facility. Will decide the best cost effective way to contact possible relatives i.e tracegenie, Ancestry etc.

Been on FreeBMD and found the marriage and children of Francis and Frances (nee Mattocks) Shepherd.

Latest news is I have made contact with a relative who is linked by the marriage of Francis Joseph Shepherd and Frances Mary Eugene Mattocks via the pairing of yourselves and the "Bootle Times" website. He confirms our links.

This has been a fascinating journey so far and I know there is so much more to explore. Never would I have thought that I would be having a written conversation with a relative that I had no prior knowledge of, such is the power of the internet when all resources come together.

Thank you so much, the search continues.

Best Regards
Allan
