Thanks Susan, that makes more sense than that the amendments were made at the time.

Re: Help with transcription please
Welcome to the forum Sylvia, I'm sorry but we too appear to be stumped.
Once again I have been down the marriages for Dixon looking for either Bridget Dixon or a Bridget to have married to one. There are a couple of entries but I really feel that they are rather early.
In 1848
DIXON Edward CAWFELL Bridget Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended
or even earlier in 1839
TAYLOR Bridget GRAHAM James Liverpool, St. Luke she was a widow and father's name Thomas Dixon, however in this instance she signed her name so almost definitely not the same person.
Ooooooh!!!
1881 census
25 Fletcher Street, Toxteth Park - address given on Mary Ellen's baptism!!!
Check it out yourself, they appear to be sharing an dwelling with a Roxburgh family
Jane? Roberts Head M 36
Mary E Wife?? heck does the enumerator not look what he's writing age 7
Sophia? Dixon Sister in Law Mar 34
All Born Liverpool
RG11; Piece: 3636; Folio: 13; Page: 19
Your lady certainly did like to be known by many different names didn't she?
Out to a meeting now, I'll take another look later.

Re: Help with transcription please
sometimes when a registrar was in attendance and the bride/groom could not write, he made note that their mark was made in his presence at the wedding, simply to avoid issues later on.

Re: Help with transcription please
Thanks, Mary for the census return. If she was down as Jane (not checked for myself yet), that makes the wedding certificate even more mystifying - the crossing out of Mary Jane by the minister and Bridget written in its place. And is the relative married to her brother, DIXON and therefore, is that her maiden name? Is there any sign of her in the 1871 census under Mary Jane/Jane/Bridget/Bedelia/Bodelia Roberts? She's a right little minx! I seem to remember there were a couple of Dixons in the family that I think were cousins of my mother - an Albert and Lottie who lived in Hillside, I think, but we were not in close touch that I remember much about them. Won't see you on Tuesday - am taking my stepdaughter for a hospital appointment.
Re: Help with transcription please
Hi Mary, I have tried many different searches of the 1881 census, and nothing comes up with either names or street name, so cannot check the info you found. Can you look again and give me details of the Roxburgh family as well as checking whether it is "Jane" and "Sophia", and who is in 24, Fletcher Street? Thanks.
Re: Help with transcription please
Sorry Sylvia I believe I have made an error because I knew the child was Mary Ellen, however she is enumerated as Mary J Roberts and search for an exact birthdate of 1874, . If you want to put in the street either use Fletcher St or just Fletcher will find it.
I put in Jane Roberts, birthdate 1845, residence Lancashire and address just fletcher. Sophia Dixon is what has been transcribed however I'm not so sure that it is what it says, but can't make anything else out of it either.
A Thomas and Elizabeth Murray and their children and Robert and Mary Hitchcock were at #24.
Can anybody else make out the name? I'm trying to ignore the upward stroke of the J from the row below which is confusing the matter, I'm not sure it is actually a downward stroke of a p.

Hi
Given that she is sister in law to Jane Roberts, there is a Sephira/Sephora Roberts on Freebmd born jun q 1848 West Derby 20 1114
sorry gotta go to work now.. but could only see a marriage of Sephorah Hughes in 1879 to David Hughes...... has she married twice or something? is the relationship not strictly sis in law somehow? grr no time to look.. sorry

Re: Help with transcription please
Celia/Cecelia/Cecilia is one I had thought of but hadn't found any marriage.
As she is a married Dixon, I looked down the Dixon/Dickson-Roberts on LancsBMD so that I could just look at all the first names, but nothing jumped out at me.
Any more suggestions girls? sorry you have to go to work Simone

Re: Help with transcription please
For what its worth I can just make out that its possibly Secilia/Secelia with an 's' ?
If you carefully remove the copperplate 'J's in both the names above and below and the tail of the 'Y' in Mary it definitely appears to look like 'Secilia ?
I just did it using 'paint'.
The 'S' is identical to the adjacent column and the rest of the letters conform with same used elsewhere.
Dont know if that helps at all ?
Assuming the name is 'Cecilia' the only hit I get is this
RG12; Piece: 3005; Folio: 93; Page: 23; GSU Roll: 6098115.
Shes "in service"

At 8 Woodend Parks, Garston, Cecilia Dixon is a widow age 47, born Liverpool, working for a George A J Whiting and his wife Theresa from London.
Thanks Vic, certainly worth keeping in mind as many of the details fit.

Re: Help with transcription please
Have I missed something somewhere
but... when she marries in 1864 she is Mary Jane / Bridget? Dixon, a WIDOW... so Dixon was really her first married name and we don't really know her maiden name?
also, as an aside, there is a Cecelia Dixon age 22 in St Thomas district in 1871... sorry not able to look at entry at the moment
Simone x

.Birth from certificate - 12th November 1873 Mary Ellen Roberts, 24 Fletcher Street, father William Roberts, Dock Labourer, mother Bodelia Roberts, formerly DIXON of 24 Fletcher Street. She made her mark on the Certificate

Re: Help with transcription please
Hi Simone, just a note from Sylvia about the daughter's birth certificate.SylviaB wrote: Birth from certificate - 12th November 1873 Mary Ellen Roberts, 24 Fletcher Street, father William Roberts, Dock Labourer, mother Bodelia Roberts, formerly DIXON of 24 Fletcher Street. She made her mark on the Certificate.
As the marriage certificate also states "formerly Dixon" but also that she was a widow, it is confusing us whether her maiden name, or previous married name was Dixon. Doesn't help with an absence of father's name.

going back to Cecelia Dixon.. she looks to be daughter of Michael and Ann/Nancy..
In 1851 they are in St Thomas district

they are in Crosbie street where they stay for next 2 census'

notice 1851 there is a Bridget, but by 1861 she is possibly Jane, and then 1871 not at home
also maybe Cecelia has said she is sister in law rather than sister because Jane is married and so perhaps the sister in law bit means in relation to the husband?
what do you think? possible?
