The marriage certificate of Gertrude would be interesting!!
If not the icing on the cake it could be the marzipan, seeing as how her son was born in the qtr after she married. A case of hello and goodbye sailor?

Herbert Ambrose Thorn is my Great Grandfather. I have passed the link if this thread on to my brother who is the Genealogist in our family, who just returned from Liverpool last week.
Hi Andrew and welcome to the forum. I hope your relative makes contact.

Hello everyone, my brother Andrew pointed me to your site a few days ago and you are now reading my first forum post. I don't want to go too far off the original topic of Edward Stackhouse, but as the thread developed, some of my relatives were mentioned so I'll just add a bit of what I have learned in the hope that someone finds it interesting.
Gertrude Stackhouse was employed by my great-grandfather Herbert Ambrose Thorn (born Herbert Ambrose Murrell in London, but that's another story) at his business Thorn's Cafe and Temperence Hotel, 60-62 Tithebarn St. Liverpool, as confirmed by the 1911 census (he also operated a number of smaller tea rooms in the area).
Herbert's first wife, Jane Douglas, died in 1938, and four years later he married Gertrude; at the time she was 57, he was 70. THe probate record of Herbert's estate shows it was divided between his widow Gertrude Thorn and Rosa Shone, wife of Leonard Shone, but not in what proportion or why. Rosa and Leonard Shone were my grandparents - he was a plasterer and she was Herbert's second daughter who worked as a caterer at the family business for many years. She later managed it after her father retired. Herbert had three other living children when he died, but apparently none of them were remembered in his will.
I don't know what ultimately happened to the business, but my grandmother once told me they were forced to sell it for a pittance when served with a CPO, and that the building was knocked down to widen the road. Whether or not this story is true is a matter of family speculation. I beleve there is a small car park on that site today.
That's probably enough for this post - as I said, I hope some of the readers found it interesting. I would welcome any further information on Herbert and his business, however, I suspect any follow up might be better placed in its own topic.
Thanks all, and hope to see you all again in the forum in the coming weeks.
For anyone interested in the probate index and wills it is worth noting that
The names given on the probate index are the executors of the will. They may or may not be the beneficiaries of the will. To see who actually was remembered in the will you need to get a copy of the will.
My grandmother is the named person on the probate index for her father but she is not a beneficiary of the will her sister who looked after their father for many years is.
Hi and welcome to the forum and thank you for the update to the story.
It would seem that if you wished to know more about the inheritance left by Herbert, the Will may give more details, we have guidelines about ordering http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... ilit=wills which I hope will help.

Wow, two very useful bits of advice generated from one post, and within a matter of hours too!

I had no idea - I always assumed those named on the probate record were the beneficieries and never gave it a second thought. This give an entirely new perspective.

I have stumbled across this thread as I have started looking into my family history.
My grandmother is Mabel Howarth who is cited in the Probate.
My father has informed me that Mabels mother, Gertrude Stackhouse went on to marry Herbert Thorn who she worked for as a servant. She was previosuly married to John Stackhouse who was killed during WW1. My Grandmother, Mabel Hudson and father, Edward John (known as John) went to live with them until Herbert passed away.
I am trying to trace any information relating to the Thorn family, the stackhouse family and the hudson family.
Any help would be much appreciated. Likewise, should you want any information I can speak with my father.
Hi and welcome to the forum, I hope you make some connections on this thread.
DS have you found a relative here?

The people I am seeking are related to Stackhouse and Thorn families. A quick review: a little over a year ago this topic seeking information about Edward Stackhouse was started: http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.or ... =2&t=12587
Towards the end of that thread, a new poster "emjane_1" joined in seeking information on the Thorn, Stackhouse and Hudson families. She said that Mabel Howarth (nee Stackhouse, formerly Hudson, 1914-1987) was her grandmother, and that her father Edward John Hudson (known as John, b.1944) might be able to answer some questions. I'd be very interested in getting in touch with these people; John might have information about - if not actual childhood memories of - my great grandfather Herbert Thorn since he and his mother lived with him for a time until his death (John's grandmother was Gertrude, nee Wilding, formerly Stackhouse and Herbert's second wife). Herbert made some specific provisions in his Will for Mabel and her son until he attained the age of 21 years.
Sadly I was absent from the forum at the time so I didn't notice Emma's post and she did not continue participating, but I'm hoping she is still watching or someone who knows the family is and can put us in touch. Meanwhile for anyone else interested in this family, the original thread makes for some fascinating reading and I might just have the key that unlocks a family secret, although it seemed that some alert experts here were already onto it...
If she is watching the post she made I thought it better your reply was attached to it. DS might know more if indeed she did reply to him, perhaps privately.

For the crew....
Unfortunately, it would appear there has been no response from Emma to the information I passed on. As I said in my post my Stackhouse baptism request was on behalf of another Stackhouse descendant and I am sure I would have been informed of any direct contact with her.

Sadly many people tend to pick up and put down research into our hobby, they don't always stick with it, falling by the wayside, which makes it difficult trying to share information.

Thanks Mary - I had to mentally flip a coin to decide whether to resurrect the original post or start a new one; it came up tails so I initially chose the latter... I thought that if I put it at the end of the original, people would not see it unless they read the whole thread or fast-forwarded to the end. Hopefully changing the title of the topic will get the attention I am hoping for and someone will be able to put us in touch. A long shot perhaps, but a genuine link to my past so I have try...
