Query re: 1911 census

Happy Christmas everyone!

Just wondered if anyone had the time to take a look at James Alfred Hibbins on the 1911 census. He was born 1856 and was living with his wife and 7 of his sons at 7 Malkin (?) Street at the time of the census.

What confuses me is that the it was his 19 year old son who signed the form on his behalf and the son has written what looks like 'For and on behalf of James Alfred Hibbins (dead)' above his signature.

Can't find any record to suggest that James died on the day of the census so can anyone enlighten me?!

James is a rather distant ancestor but I love put all the pieces together. James was actually brother of my great grandfather's (William's) 2nd wife which seems really remote but the William had 1 child with his first wife - my grandmother- and 3 with his 2nd wife and they were all really close. James's son was a witness at my grandmother's wedding just before WW1 and I think James must have had some say in the career chosen by William's eldest son - he went on to be a sheet metal worker. The things you find out when you get the family history bug, eh?!

Too right Glen, I love looking for the extended family, blood rellies or not.
As you said the occupation of sheet metal worker has been handed down.
1938 Directory has James S Hibbins sheet metal worker 6 Makin St Walton, so
they didn't move far.

No - a lot of my ancestors didn't travel far. It sometimes seems as though they just moved from one Liverpool cellar or court to another!

I wonder if I could be really cheeky and ask you to do me a favour? If you have ready access to Gores/Kellys would you mind seeing if you can identify when William Gordon, joiner, moved into 14 Thornbury Road, Anfield. I know he died there in 1935. I was brought up at this address and have often wondered how long my family had been there. Indeed, I suppose there is a chance that they may have been the first occupiers as I am not sure when this council estate was built.

Hi Glen 1938 Gores/Kellys has a Mrs Jane Maddox at number 14.
I only have 1911 Kellys prior to this.

Just checked 1914 directory and there is no Thornbury Road listed, maybe not built then.

Is this your William Gordon joiner living at 9 Butterfield Street N in 1914?

He's in 1911 Gores/Kellys too
2 deaths in 1935 one aged 60 the other 70.

Yes - my William Gordon is the joiner in Butterfield Street and he is the one who died in 1935 aged 70 years.
When he died, he was living in Thornbury Road - Jane Maddox was William's widowed daughter (her husband, Robert, had been killed in WW1) and my grandmother. I was subsequently brought up in Thornbury Road so the family were there for many years and I am beginning to wonder if William was the first tenant of this council house as I am sure he moved from Butterfied Street to Thornbury.

I am a great-granddaughter of James Alfred HIBBINS (son of James Stephen HIBBINS and Jane J. FELL). I know that he had three sisters, Isabella, Ann and Elizabeth. Is one of those your gr-grandfather's wife? There were also two brother that I know of - John and William. Although there must be plenty of descendents, I have only once before come across anyone researching this family. I'd love to know what you have found.

P.S. My grandfather, Walter HIBBINS was also a sheet-metal worker (!) as were several of his brothers but my dad (the only male descendant of all of those brothers) broke the mold and became an engineer.

Elizabeth married my great-grandfather, William Gordon, in 1901. It was his 2nd marriage as his first wife had died in 1893, aged 28. Their only living child was my grandmother, Jane, although they had also had a son who died when he was a baby.
Elizabeth and William went on to have several children including 2 sons (George and William) and a daughter (Eva) who were all very close to my grandmother and all ended up living together as my grandmother was widowed in WW1. I also lived with Eva and William and holidayed with George's family - he had moved to the Chester area - so I knew them really well. I knew they were my grandmother's step-siblings but it was only when I started doing family history that I found out about Elizabeth Hibbins.
James Stephen Hibbins (Elizabeth's nephew) was a witness at my grandmother's wedding and so with all these connections I would love to know more about the Hibbins family!
