Re: Amelia Hughes help needed
This is the information I got from Marg Watson reg. Alice Jones. Hopefully it might at some point help in tracing Amelia:
Andrew Jones married in 1822 to Mary Ann Mellor at St Mary’s Shrewsbury, Shropshire. There children were:
Charlotte christened 1/1/1826
Sarah christened 21/2/1827
Elizabeth christened 7/7/1828
Mary Anne christened 23/7/1829
William christened 16/3/1832
Sarah christened 9/4/1833
Mary christened 21/8/1834.
In the 1841 census I found the family living in Dansie(?) Street, Liverpool:
Andrew Jones aged 36 agricultural labourer – born Lancashire
Mary Ann Jones aged 35 born Lancashire
Elizabeth Jones aged 12 born Lancashire
William Jones aged 7 born Lancashire
By this time (1841) both Alice and Charlotte were possible working as maids and not living at home.
in the 1851 census living at 23 Chapel Lane Street, Liverpool
Andrew Jones aged 50 Porter born Whitchurch
Mary Jones aged 49 born Whitchurch
Elizabeth Jones aged 20 servant born Whitchurch
William Jones aged 17 Ass Printer born Whitchurch.

Hi Folks
I'm joining this conversation thread a year or two after it looks like it closed. I also am researching Amelia Hughes and her children, particularly her daughter Alice Glover. Everything I've read in this thread seems to indicate that, without a major breakthrough, it is unlikely that Amelia's origins with be discovered. Has anyone tried to follow her husband William Glover? He seems like a mystery man to me. I can not find anything at all.

Hi and welcome to the forum. It would seem that Frank, the original poster, hasn't returned to the forum for over a year and is no longer a member, but perhaps they will get notification and return to take a look.
If you are looking for help for William Glover, it might be easier to make a new post and give a summary of what you have for him and what you are looking for and I'm sure our crew will try to help.

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed
Hopefully someone will give us an update on whether any of the researchers managed to get a copy of Amelia's marriage or death certificate.

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed
Thanks folks... I will consider starting a new post on William Glover however I am still very interested in Amelia if anyone finds anything... Just in case anyone is interested Amelia's daughter, Alice Glover, married Henry Jones and became Lady Alice when Henry became Sir Henry. Alice became THE Lady of Tasmania and the major patron of the arts in Hobart. An amazing story when one considers that she grew up in a slab hut out in the bush. By the way I live in Hobart so if anyone wants any 'hands on' work done I should be able to help.
thanks again
thanks again

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed
The death certificate could provide a place of birth which would help to establish whether she was born in Liverpool or came to Liverpool from elsewhere.louis wrote:Hi Frank
Compulsory registration of BDM in Tasmania was introduced in December 1838, but not every BDM was registered. Tasmanian Marriage Certificates provide the names of the people being married, date and place of marriage, age, occupation and status, names of witnesses.
Names of parents, and places of birth, of the people being married were not added until 1896
For Tasmanian Death Certificates prior to 1897 particulars recorded were: Name of deceased, date and place of death, age, occupation, cause of death.
In 1897 the birthplace of the deceased was added.
Have you searched for references to Amelia Hughes in Tasmanian Newspapers ? There are four references to a Amelia Hughes, two in The Colonial Times (Hobart) July & August 1848, one in The Cornwall Chronicle (Launceston), March 1850, and one in the Launceston Examiner, March 1850. This is most likely your Amelia. The web site for online digitised Australian newspapers is http://www.trove.nla.gov.au
An Australian gateway site for hundreds of links is http://www.coraweb.com.au
If you haven't already done so, I would suggest to read the various guides relating to Tasmanian records at http://www.linc.tas.gov.au
The police number on Amelia's convict indent is a unique number to her and any other reference in later records should be referenced by her number (helps searching records for the right person). I still think the best chance of finding her parent's names is for someone to check the indictment record in Liverpool Record Office. As there was no parent's names on her convict indent I think its rather unlikely that you will find one in the Tasmanian records, but don't give up until all avenues are exhausted.
Hope this helps in your search.

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed
Hi everyone, finally back on the forum and continuing researching Amelia. Not much really new except that her death certificate does not mention her parents names. Have sent an email to Greg Jefferys who is also interested in her so hopefully we'll be able to uncover further info.
The Tasmanian BDM records are now online. Have been trying to find her marriage to William Glover. Have looked at 1855, 1856 and 1857 but there is no record for her marriage. I believe she married in Port Sygnet as her son Henry Glover was born there on Nov. 17, 1856.

Hello Frank
I am the Project Co-ordinator for the Society and was very interested in your post. Last year we were approached by the Female Convicts Research Centre in Tasmania. They asked for our help in researching the backgrounds of the women who were transported to Van Diemen's Land during the mid 1800's. They have researched what happened to them after arrival and want to know their background and about any family they left behind. Your Amelia is on the list recently received. Please message me if you would like to be involved in this research - I am sure you will.
