He was in SA from 30 Nov 1899 to 3 Jul 1901. Promoted to Corporal 20 Nov 1896 but was busted down to Private on the 17 Sep 1897 and forfeited a Good Conduct Badge. Haven't yet worked out what he was found guilty of. Looks like "Convicted of failing to appear". He also served in Egypt and India.
Several images of his records are on Findmypast.

Re: currie rogers
I am curious about Fredericks father, Robert was he in the navy? And based in Barbados?
Re: currie rogers
Robert was in the 98th regiment, Army.
Keep in mind, the 1881 census return recording Greenwich Pensioner, normally associated with Navy/ Marines may have been a mistake and should be, Chelsea Pensioner.

Robert was actually in the Army, now confirmed from his Service Discharge Record below.curriesimpson wrote:I am curious about Fredericks father, Robert was he in the navy? And based in Barbados?
ROBERT ROGERS
Birth year: 1840
Birth town: LIVERPOOL, LANCASHIRE
Service number: 252
Rank: SERGEANT
Document Type: Discharge
Attestation date: 18 Feb 1858
Discharge Corps: 98TH THE PRINCE OF WALES'S REG OF FOOT
Discharge service number: 252
Discharge date: 3 June 1879

Must have been a 'good' soldier... got busted down to Private from Sergeant twice including a Court Marshal but made it back up to 3 stripes before discharge after 21 years service!
We know he served in India, Barbados and Malta with the 98th Regt from his marriage and the births of his children. You can see the history of the 98th online.
Several images of his Service Record are on Findmypast as are those of his sons.

Re: currie rogers
Can i dismiss all the info about being in the navy and being on ships Pembroke and Slaney
Re: currie rogers
Yes, posted only as a possible and one to consider because of Robert Rogers being declared as a Greenwich Pensioner in 1881, since proven not to be correct by further findings.curriesimpson wrote:Can i dismiss all the info about being in the navy and being on ships Pembroke and Slaney

Re: currie rogers
Ive got all the army docs of Robert, Frederick and his brother, thank you.
How would i know find out about about Roberts father and mother, ie where where they born etc.

Re: currie rogers
You have Robert's approximate age and place of origin from the 1881 census where he is back home as a Chelsea Pensioner. His father's name could be on his enlistment record. Because his marriage to Catherine Lawley took place in India it didn't make its way into the GRO record as far as I can see. And their respective fathers are not shown on the marriage register page.curriesimpson wrote:How would i know find out about about Roberts father and mother, ie where where they born etc.
The document detailing his release from the Militia and enlisting in the 98th Regt dated 24 Feb 1858 states his age as 23. That points to a 1835 birth or thereabouts. This was before the civil registers began in 1837 so there would be no birth certificate only a parish baptism with a bit of luck.
You could look for Robert in the 1841 and 1851 although there will probably be more than one. If you trace the ones you find in the 1861 when we know Robert was away in the Army you will be able to discount them from the earlier censuses.
Edited to correct an OOOPS!

Re: currie rogers
I would have thought the most likely birth date for Robert would be 1836 ish, recorded on the 1881 census and on the marriage notification, India. Deaths in Lancashire, 1881-1891 giving best fit,
Robert Rogers, aged 48, 1883,
West Derby, 8b 242.
Robert Rogers, aged 48, 1883,
