Post by Macker »

Hi
Can anyone help - I'm looking for information concerning the WW1 Diaries of the 422nd (West Lancs)Field Coy Royal Engineers possibly part of the 55th Division
I already have some information concering my GGreat Uncle Sapper Edward Smith Army Number 426299. He was from St Helens and served in this unit and was killed on 22nd June 1917 in Belgium

Can anyone advise the best place to start when looking for the units War Diaries

Many Thanks

The National Archives have started to digitise Unit War Diaries - I've downloaded a few from the units some of mine served in and they make interesting reading.

I can confirm that 422 Field Company, RE was part of 55th (West Lancs) Division in WW1, along with 419 and 423.

"The Story of the 55th Division 1916-1919" by the Rev J.O. Coop, its chaplain, includes at pages 180/1 an appendix outlining "work of RE and Pioneers during the advance, from August to November 1918".

You may find a copy in a large library, and I think it may have been reprinted.
