Misskelly

Post by Kirkdale1 »

I am looking for the birth, as well as censuses for 1861 and 1871 for
Rose Ann MISSKELLY
estimated birth year 1854 in Liverpool

She married WILLIAM WHITESIDE on 10th November 1877
at St Thomas' Pendleton, Lancashire
At the time of the marriage:
Rose Ann Mifskelly age 24 Spinster living at 22 Gerald Street Father John Mifskelly (deceased)
William a labourer aged 24 living at 21 Brewerton St. son of Grave Whiteside Flax Dresser
{note the old way of spelling with the “f” and the “s”}

1881 Census she was living at 84 Marsh Street, Barrow in Furness, Lancashire
Rose Ann Whiteside age 27 born Liverpool, Lancashire
William Whiteside age 28 etc.

DEATH:
Rose Ann Whiteside died in Q4 1895, age 42, Sunderland, County Durham.

With Misskelly being such an unusual name I thought this would be quite straight forward but how wrong I was :-))

If anybody can give me any pointers to Rose Ann and her family prior to her marriage I'd be very grateful.

Thanks Bert, yes, I had seen these.
There are a few Miskellys' in Liverpool around this time. Is it a coincidence that Rose Ann gives her address as Gerard Street on her wedding day in 1877 and the 1861 census has possible father John and his family living in Gerard Street also, albeit a different, number do you think ?
Frustrating that she doesn't give her father's occupation when she married.

William John Miskelly
St Peter
Baptism Date:
18 Jun 1854
Liverpool, St Peter
John Miskelly
Mary Miskelly

I can't make it out, it looks like it could be May 30th for his birth. Perhaps Rose Ann was a visiting relative. Same estimated birth year.

When Rose Ann married in 1877 she states her father John Mis(s)kelly was deceased. In the family that Bert found in 1851, and appears in 1861 and 1871 the father is John.

The only death up to 1901 that fits is this one...
Deaths Sep 1885: Miskelly, John [63] - Liverpool 8b 46

Admittedly his given age doesn't quite fit with his census YoBs but that may because his wife had died and he remarried having lost a couple of years?

Deaths Mar 1875: MISKELLY, Mary [51] - W Derby 8b 451
Marriages Jun 1876: Miskelly, John and McElwee, Agnes - W. Derby 8b 818

1881 census: RG11 Piece 3652 Folio 12 Page 17
Address: 13 Lark Lane, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
John Miskelly Head 62 1819 Provision Dealer - Ireland
Agnes Miskelly Wife 43 1838 - Ireland
Agnes M S Miskelly Dtr 2 1879 - Liverpool
John Mce Miskelly Son 1 1880 - Liverpool
Sarah J Mc Math Servant u/m 16 1865 General Domestic Serv - Liverpool

I suspect this Rose Ann is not a daughter of the John Miskelly's family.

Just a thought... The GRO has her marriage as:
Marriages Dec 1877: Kelly, Rose Ann M married Whiteside, William - Salford 8d 66
Is this the above Rose?
Births Dec 1854: Kelly, Rose Ann - Manchester 8d 161

Lancs BMDs have transcribed the marriage as:
WHITESIDE, William and MISSKELLY, Rose A - Pendleton, St Thomas, Salford.
Could that MISS be a slip of the pen?

Similarly Lancs Online PC have it transcribed as:
Marriage: 10 Nov 1877 St Thomas, Pendleton, Lancashire, England
William Whiteside - 24, Labourer, Bachelor, 21 Brewerton St.
Rose Ann Misskelly - 24, Factory Operative, Spinster, 22 Gerald Street
Groom's Father: Grave Whiteside, Flax Dresser
Bride's Father: John Misskelly, (deceased)
Witness: Lewis Espin, (X); Mary Abraham, (X); Thomas Hayward
Married by Superintendent Registrar's Certificate by: Chas. A. Wesley

Bob, if you have the 1877 marriage cert and could you scan and post it here please?

Bertie, where did you get the certificate from. I've based my searches on the info on the OPC site.

Just in case that name does turn out to be Kelly after all, here's a candidate with a father John and 'Rosanna' is a 'Factory operative', same as on the marriage cert.
Perhaps her familial name was Rosanna aka Rose Ann?

1871: RG10 Piece 4033 Folio 99 Page 34
Address: 4 Coal Street, Manchester
John Kelly Head 39 1832 Pipe maker - Dublin, Ireland
Mary Ann Kelly Wife 38 1833 H-Keeper - Staffordshire
Rosanna Kelly Dtr 16 1855 Factory operative - Lancashire
Christopher Kelly Son 14 1857 Pipemaker - Lancashire
William Kelly Son 8 1863 - Lancashire
Eliza Kelly Dtr 6 1865 - Lincolnshire
John Kelly Son 4 1867 - Yorkshire
James Kelly Son 2 1869 - Lancashire

And the father could have died before 1877...
Death: JOHN KELLY
Birth year: 1833
Age: 39
Death year/quarter: 1872 / Dec
District: MANCHESTER; Volume 8D; Page 100
