Burial of Bridget Powell (nee McGrath)

Post by plimmerian »

trying a new approach to find James Powell!

his first wife Bridget died in Clock Face, St Helens on 29 Dec 1877
she was buried on 01 Jan 1878 at Sutton, St Helens at St Anne's & Blessed Dominic R.C. Churchyard

I'm wondering if burial records are available to see who was buried with her or if MIs have been made of any headstones?

Thank you.

Sorry about the problem, I would like to suggest that you send an email to the Publications Officer http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/contact.php and ask him if it is ok to just send a cheque.

I haven't used a cheque book in years and I've not had one issued from my bank over a similar period! :?

sadly no POWELL listed in the MI list - saved trudging aimlessly looking for a headstone! Back to the drawing board. :|

Oh dear, sadly it might be necessary to check the burial register instead as it would include all burials, not just those with headstones.

Not having much luck here! Had a reply from St Helens:

"Thank you for your enquiry. I had a look at the records we hold and though we have a record of death for Bridget Powell we don't have burial records for that period.

We did have some records on a cd but unfortunately the format they were compiled and created in is no longer compatible with our system..."

Sorry, they would be the ones to know so if they don't I'm at a loss to suggest.

Hi

I was finally directed to St Anne & Blessed Dominic's telephone number and told only they would know

They confirmed Bridget's death and her burial at St Anne & Blessed Dominic, Sutton, St Helens on 1 January 1878 - no plot number is known - no other POWELL believed to be buried with her - unable to confirm if any other surname in the same plot

trying to find James POWELL and to see if he is buried with his second wife, now I've got her death date - have left the details with St Mary & St John's RC Church in Newton Le Willows - watch this space! ;-)

(also as a son of James and Bridget appears to have moved to Ireland by 1901 and 1911 census entries, I'm wondering if he may have died there or at sea in a crossing at some point)

Someone dropped the ball, introducing a new system without transferring data. Just because the CD is no longer compatible with their system doesn't mean it can't be read. I know a bit of software and know people who know a lot more; if you can get a copy of the CD I'll try to find how it might be recovered. It seems a shame to lose a list like that.

I'd missed that post, or at least didn't realise the implications.

I wonder if St Helens would allow the loan of the CD in order to either make a copy or to try on other systems.

I do know that it may well depend on the age of it, for example I had the IGI on CD which is not supported any longer, but also will not play on anything post Windows XP I think is the latest. It's a shame that such resources haven't been copied onto more up to date software.

I've just sent an email reply to see if they would forward the CD on to the society and I await their response! ;-)
