Occupants of a house in Brecon
Occupants of a house in Brecon
I have just received a marriage certificate which shows the bride's address as 38 Orchard Street, Brecon. The certificate is dated 1907 and the bride's name is Annie Jones (not an easy one to find in Wales). Is there any way I can find out who was living in the house then? I suspect she was a servant but not sure. To compound the problem there is no father named on the certificate.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks in advance

Re: Occupants of a house in Brecon
Thanks for that Bertie. I'm even more confused now! Where was Annie and why is there no father's name on her marriage certificate? Maybe she just took Benjamin's name but couldn't put him on the certificate. Should I be looking for the birth of Annie Morris?
I'm having the same trouble with her husband, William Lewis, except he was born in London with a father, also William. How he got to Breconshire will always be a mystery, I think.
My head's spinning!

Re: Occupants of a house in Brecon
Hi Barbara,
Matilda only had 2 children, crossed out on the 1911 census. Annie must not of known who her father was and never bothered to make one up, or refused to acknowledge him.
She may have been related to Benjamin, but not a daughter.

Re: Occupants of a house in Brecon
What age was Annie at her marriage?
If she was a Morris and didn't know her father, why use Jones and leave the Father's name blank. If it was an embarrassment for her being illegitimate, she would have made a name up.

Re: Occupants of a house in Brecon
Hi Bert
Sorry not to have got back sooner but we've had thunderstorms here which means we have to unplug the computer in case it blows up. I lost an oven in a previous storm!
I have William in the census returns - he is also in Wales in 1891.
Annie was 22 when she married which makes her DOB 1885. That fits with the girl you found. I don't know if the Lewis family are connected to William or not. I think I found William in earlier censuses with a father William who is a cabinet maker. His occupation on the marriage certificate is 'carpenter'. In addition one of the witnesses is Albert Lewis and he also figures in the earlier census. The other witness is Emily Lewis who I suspect might be Albert's wife.
The big mystery is Annie Jones. I was completely gobsmacked when I got the certificate because I thought I'd found her with her family so when no father was recorded I was a bit nonplussed to say the least. I'll keep at it. Thank you for all your help.
