Baptism look up please.

Post by lynne99 »

Hi, I cannot find my father's baptism. He was born on 3 May 1903 and the address was either 318 Westminster Road or 8 Mayfield (off Westminster Rd). I know he was baptised as I have his christening dress :D . It was VERY tiny. I had to have it made bigger to use for my children. I think he must have been baptised before he was very old.

Perhaps some one could look up at the record office for me next time they go.

Thanks Lynne

What's his name and what denomination where the family and have you found a likely church where the baptism might have taken place?

Hi both. I am silly forgot to put his name
Alexander Manchester Fletcher Born 3 May 1903 at either 318 Westminster Rd, or 8 Mayfields. (Both close to each other) They were C of E (I think). I have looked on Ancestry Find my past and Lancs Online parish council. But you might find things I have not.

We can cross off St Paul's CE Kirkdale from the list of possibles as the baptisms are on Ancestry for 1856-1906. There's various churches in the Kirkdale area it's also possible the baptism was in the city centre. I paid the Record Office to do the research needed to get my Dad's, Mum's, uncles, aunts etc baptisms as various churches had to be checked, instructing them to check this church, that church for each person then getting the image. This Genuki page probably has a better list of the Kirkdale churches than Lancs OPC as they mention a Welsh CE church St Asaph on Westminster Road near Mayfield, Lancs OPC don't list it, St Lawrence CE is quite near in Barlow Lane too if you look at maps of the area on Liverpool History Projects:-

Need to think again. St Lawrence has records only from 1906

St Asaphs was a Chapel of Rest between 1888-1901 and no records still exist for it.

Thanks all. The churches in that area, that are left are (I think) St Mary's Kirkdale; possibly St Mary's Walton; St Luke's Everton; Any other suggestions!!

His mother Alice Elizabeth Manchester was baptised at St Georges Everton and his father Alexander Fletcher was baptised at St John the Baptist Toxteth. His parents were married at St Mary's Walton on the Hill. These might be possible, what do you think??

I would say that Toxteth would be out of the area being South Liverpool and Kirkdale being north.

St George is a possible but this is on Ancestry, St Mary's Walton on the Hill is a maybe.

Well there's still St Mary's Walton on the Hill otherwise how absolutely sure are you that it wouldn't be an RC baptism?

In that case the records may not be with the RO, some of these small chapels have kept hold of them. The only one listed in Liverpool http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/church ... AN,ID=2548 give the wrong dates for your interest. Might be a good idea for you to contact the Record Office with your thoughts and ask if they hold anything unusual like that.

Thanks Mary. Might put it on the back burner for a bit. Unless St Mary's Walton come on line.

Mary
QUOTE: St Asaph's was a Chapel of Rest

I think a Chapel of Ease is more likely!

An old directory shows it in Westminster Road, Welsh language, and a Chapel of Ease to St David's, Hampstead Road, also Welsh language, but previously at Brownlow Hill..

No entry for baptism up to the end of 1903 in either St Mary's Kirkdale or St Mary's Walton on the Hill.
