William Mawdsley & Adam Duff Blacksmiths

Post by Scully »

Hi Everyone & happy new year.

I'm hoping someone can help me in finding any information regarding a Blacksmith business. I'm trying to find this info for an uncle who will be talking about his father Wm Mawdsley on Radio City on 13th Jan.

My aunt thinks the business was at Back Lodwick Street. My aunt also mentioned Lower Bank View & Lower Mersey View, I don't know if Wm & Adam ran their business from The latter two addresses.

I have looked on the Internet & I can't find anything about the business or the two men so any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. A photo of the business or the men would be fantastic & I'll keep looking but any hints on where to look would be great.

I think the timeline would be the 40's/50's.

Best wishes
Tracey.

Correction. These addresses are in Kirkdale just on the Liverpool side of the Liverpool and Bootle/Sefton boundary. There is a boundary on that map but it's not very clear this map is a little better at showing the boundary with dashes:-

Thanks again Blue, I've posted this on the Bootle website also because I only have a short time to find information for my uncle. I'm off to bed now but will search again later.

Hi Tracey, 1938 Gores/Kellys have Adam Duff Blacksmith at Duff & Maudsley 4 Graylands Place, Graylands Rd N.
The Place was between Amersham Rd and Grandison Rd, Walton Hall Avenue area.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for that info Tina & happy new year. I don't think my uncle will know that as he remembers going to the Smithy as a young lad in the early 50's but doesn't have info for earlier times.

Thanks for that Mary, I don't know if he's the same William Mawdsley. My aunt didn't mention a second name of Henry but that doesn't mean it isn't him. I'll pass on the info.

I have my doubts, being in Birkenhead but if you don't have it on file you can't investigate can you.

This is true Mary. At least I can discount him if he's not who I'm looking for & get back on the right track.

Thanks for all the help from everyone, it's very much appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for your help in looking for a photo for my uncle of his dad's Blacksmith's business. I didn't find one but just to let you know my uncle won't now be talking on the radio tomorrow due to him having a medical appointment. Thanks again to all who helped.

Hi Tracey, Wm Hy from 1911 was born in Lpl as was his wife and 3 year old son. So they hadn't long been in Birkenhead for whatever reason. He married at St Bridget's Wavertree (where I was baptised) in 1906. Early census put him with his folks in Toxteth Park.
Sorry I can't be more definite.
