Baines, looking for marriage around 1770s

Post by daggers »

I have failed to find a marriage for John Baines to a wife Rachael. They had seven sons baptised at St Thomas's, Liverpool, between 1775 and 1792 but neither the Ancestry Liverpool records nor IGI have a marriage.
I begin to wonder if they were married at Childwall, and know that the parish records are largely inaccessible.
I do not know the occupation of the father. (He is not the schoolmaster of the free school, who married Mary Goore/Gore and had sons baptised at St Peter's.)
Any suggestions please?

As usual you seem to have delivered the goods. I had found via IGI a note of a Chester allegation & bond for this couple which seemed to fit and was working towards getting a sight of the marriage register. His abode was transcribed as 'Warntin' and he was 'husbandman'.
Thanks very much!

Where can the BTs be found, please?

You should be able to find this and other Bishop's Transcripts of Childwall marriages here:-

Good find, as with the date from the BT's it will make it easier to check the PR's. I think the marriages are on film at the library but it's a case of working your way through the microfilm, not an easy job.

In case anyone follows this later, the name was 'Beans' in the Childwall register, for the marriage in 1768 and for the baptism of at least one child at the same church. The name became 'Baines' after the family moved to have baptisms at St Peter in Liverpool. Who can say how names were pronounced so long ago!
