Info from a death certificate. 1860

I have bought the death certificate for my great, great grandfather Samuel Varley b c 1810 in Liverpool according to the 1851 census. He died on 11 January 1860 from disease of the lungs, at 12, Henderson St, Liverpool. The informant was Hannah Pafs of Hill St. (Samuel used to live in Hill St on 1851 census)
I cannot find Henderson St on the Liverpool history project map and would like help with this if poss.
Also I cannot find Hannah Pafs in the 1851 or 1861 census. I would like to find if she was a relative.
I have never been able to find a baptism for Samuel. The nearest was b 1809 in Kendal Westmoreland. From his marriage certificate his father was Joseph Varley and they might have been non conformists. (3 children from his second marriage (in 1845) were buried in the Wesleyan Chapel in Stanhope St in late 1852 and 3) His second wife, Elizabeth Evans, was from Barmouth. This is my Great x2 grandmother. The first marriage was to Ann Owens in 1840.
I am now completely stuck with this family and I am hoping someone can help me past a brickwall and set me on my way again. Thanks in anticipation.

The naming of the children, 1851, HO107, P2186, F89, P14, may suggest Samuel's parents names, Joseph and Margaret Ann, perhaps the middle name of Ann after first wife.
They are the parents names on the Westmoreland Baptism. Food for thought.

In case it is of any help with directories around the right time, the father, Joseph's, occupation was Currier and at his marriage to Ann Owens in 1840 states that he is dead.

Thanks Mary, I had found the marriage but missed that important short word Dead.
Also the baptism in Westmoreland. I think it is the most likely at the moment, but I had a thought. Lancashire went into the bottom on the lake district bit. Is it possible they lived in Lancshire but baptised in Kendal??? Just a thought.

There's few possibilities, would Samuel know where he was born, he may have moved when very young, if he did, would he know for sure the county, would the enumerator know the county.
We all know the enumerators didn't get it right on all occasions or didn't care that much.
Elizabeth's place of birth, 1851 census, an example.


I remember a Geography test our class got at school, many years ago now.
Asked to name all the states in the United States and all the British Counties, the states won hands down.
I bet it would be the same now.

I agree he might not know where he was born. I think that is likely. I will have to search for a death of Joseph or Mary (Ann) before 1840, in Liverpool. Thanks again Bertie.

haha...you beat me to it! A few years ago at Christmas time, conversation somehow turned to 'Washington'. I was shocked to discover that my niece - a Geography student on her way to a First Class - had no idea about Washington State.. or DC... or the difference... or where they are... Her mother explained that 'They don't do that sort of stuff anymore'.

I've found the Joseph and Margaret Varley that had the child Samuel in Kendal Westmoreland in Liverpool a year later 1810

Baptism: 10 Feb 1811 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Joseph Varlow - Son of Late Joseph Varlow & Margaret (formerly Atkinson)
    Born: 4 Oct 1810
    Abode: Vauxhall Rd
    Occupation: Morrano Finisher?
Surname misspelt but I believe it may by Varley. I will look on Anc. to see if the original is there.
What is a Morrano finisher and is it likely he could have become a currier, which I think is to do with horses.

Anyway it says Joseph son of the late Joseph ???? and Margaret Atkinson his wife of Vauxhall Rd. The couple who had Samuel in Westmoreland were called Joseph and Margaret Atkinson) I am so excited!! very exciting discovery. Thanks for help. Now see if the death can be found.

It is me again. Found his burial from bishop's transcripts Nov 1810, He is a "Leather " finisher and a currier deals with leather.
I do feel good. How can I find where he was buried because it does not say. Thanks

There are various Liverpool church records in that collection if you go back page by page from Joseph's burial entry you will come to a heading at the beginning of the year 1810 on page 357 it says, "Burials St John's church for the year 1810".
