Baptism and Parents for Edmund/Edward Willcock

Post by Fazak8474 »

I have found my 4G grandfather called Edward or Edmund Willcock. He starts as Edmund then changes to Edward. He marries Ann Newton on 16 May 1787 at St Oswalds Winwick. He has 7 children all baptised at Newchurch in Culcheth (except one son bap in Leigh) and they all live at Culcheth. Edward is a weaver and I have found him on 1841 Census living at Dam Lane, Golborne. He dies in Golborne on 24 Dec 1847 age 88 yrs and is buried in Newchurch Culcheth. Edward's birth year would be 1759, I have tried searching Lancs parish clerks and ancestry with no luck. I would really like to find his baptism and parents, can anyone help please?

I'm thinking that the early registers for these parishes haven't been passed over to Ancestry, I wonder if you might consider a CD from the shop

Winwick (St Oswald) Ref: OS-PR-52
Baptisms & Burials 1756-1806
£9.50

Alternatively they will be on microfilm at the local library, Warrington probably for Winwick, Leigh or St Helens for others, but check what they have before visiting.

Sorry no luck. Lancs OPC has good coverage apart from Winwick/Newchurch where there are pages missing in the baptism register. On Lancs OPC it says, "[At this point in the register, pages 70-71 are missing]" this is between baptisms on 21 Oct 1759 and 2 Nov 1760. I thought I might have had some luck on the Bishop's Transcript there was a baptism at Newchurch of a Wilcock child on 6 July 1760 who was born on 10 Jun 1760 to a father called William but the child's name was on a part of the record that has been torn or worn away. Family Search though has this child's name as Joseph.

The closest match I can find is this one:-

Name: Edmund Wilcock
Father: William Wilcock
Baptism: 4 Sep 1763
Church: Eccles, St Mary, Lancashire, England
Register: Bishop's Transcript

Thanks to everyone for their efforts, that's really helpful and has given me some clues.
