Town Hall Roll of Honour, WW1,seeking copy of original cert.

The Roll of Honour holds some 15,000 names of the city's WW1 fallen, on panels in a dedicated room within the Town Hall. I have just seen, in Stephen McGreal's book 'Liverpool in the Great War' (Pen & Sword, 2014) a b/w copy of a certificate presented to the family of one of Liverpool's soldiers whose name is on the Roll of Honour.

Has any Forum member got a copy of one of these certificates? I would very much like to see it, especially if it is in colour. I have asked the Record Office if they have one, but was told 'no'. The Town Hall have issued a different certificate to families who have had a name added to the panels in recent times, but it is the original I am looking for.

The illustration in the book shows, in ornate script, 'THE GLORIOUS DEAD', followed by a two-line space for a name, rank, etc., and then 'fought and died for his Country in the Great War. His name is inscribed upon the Liverpool Roll of Honour at the Town Hall in grateful remembrance.'

The Lord Mayor's signature and the coat of arms of the city are featured, with a surrounding pattern of roses, Liver Birds,and a large female robed figure wearing a coronet. At her feet is a galleon or galley with another Liver Bird on the foresail. The designer's name at the foot of the document is 'T.J. BOND'.

Any copy or more information would be most welcome.

Not come across any report of a scroll being given out Daggers. I have come across articles of who the names of those killed, died etc was to be sent to. It gives a name and a address and if I am correct it was not the Town Hall. I'll look it up and carry out a search on the newspaper archive and see if I can find any origin of this scroll.

I bump in to him from time to time, unfortunately not often enough to ask. We went to college together and worked in the same place, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem, however I'm sure someone can contact him on Face ache.

I was at the Town Hall in 2010 for the ceremony of adding names, in my case a great uncle. I was given a roll of thick paper / light card, but it was of the whole panel of new names that were going up that day. No crests, no colour, not what was described in your OP.

Latest on this request: I managed to contact Stephen McGreal via his publisher but he no longer had the certificate.
I have had another photo of an original, via another forum, but this was a photo of a framed photo, angled and with part of the image missing.
Ever hopeful, I have not given up and someone might see tis who can help....

Can anyone work out the Lord Mayor's name? I can, I think see Burton???. The Lord Mayor when WW1 was in full force was Mather, I think. Is it possible these scrolls were given out on the unveiling of the Hall of Remembrance in the 1920's. Could be wrong.

The Lord Mayor was actually EILLS, not Ellis. Often confused. He lost a nephew* in WW1. There was a family firm of ships suppliers at the end of Hanover Street.

May be worth looking up the report of the unveiling of the Hall of Remembrance in the Town Hall to see if Scrolls were issued to the families. When was the Hall of Remembrance unveiled? I can look up the report in the papers.
