Hi all, I've been driven to distraction looking for my wife's great great grandfather, William Sinnett (in the various records as Sennett, Sinnett and Lennett!). There is an entry in the 1911 census for him, but it has been crossed though, and the totals at the bottom exclude him. It is definitely the correct family. Originally I thought it was because he had died, and he was shown in error, but his other half is shown as 'wife' and not 'widow', so I reckoned he was still alive.

I tried a different avenue, and FMP came up with a hit, showing a William Sinnett, born the approx year, and showing as a sailor - other records have him as a mariner, so getting close.

Records in 1911 show him as a patient in the above establishment. Does anybody have a clue as to what kind of institution this was?

I've then got to sort out his date of death. His daughter, my wife's great grandmother is in all the records as Sennett. Good fun this, isnt it

William's removal from the 1911 family census could be because he's at sea.

I was looking at the same last night. The 1911 census is definitely correct, as the family lived in St John's Road in Bootle, and the visitors, the Yates, are my wife's relatives. I agree that the marriage dates and number of children don't match. Looking at other trees, there is a lot of confusion as there is a William Harrison Sinnett, who a lot of people have as 'my' William'. He might be related, but he ain't the same .

I have even had to look for 'Lennett' in the records, as the 1891 record is recorded so; I know that it is my William, as one of the visitors was a niece, who my MIL had mentioned in passing.

The Probate record for Mary Ellen helps, as it shows proceeds going to her daughter, Mary Ellen, who is my wife's 2nd great aunt. I need to cross reference now the 9 children. The new GRO death register helps, but because some were Sinnetts or Sennetts, and it doesnt give the mother's maiden name, I'm struggling a bit.

I'm going to speak to one of my wife's elder relatives in the next week or so, so she may give some more clues.

Have you tried burial records to see if the couple are buried together? It might be worth enquiring about Bootle Cemetery Records. These are held at Thornton Crematorium and Garden of Rest. They may also now be available on Family Search.

As you have a date of death perhaps there is an obituary in the local paper. Bootle Times is on film available at Crosby Library.

Thanks for the link Blue, I found the mother Mary Ellen on the first page I looked at in 1925. She is buried in Bootle cemetery in the C of E section 8 grave 517. It says that the grave was reopened, so I will look further back and see if I can find William.

What I did see on the same page that surprised me, was I saw the address of the deceased, and there was another entry for a Thomas Yates, aged 10, who was buried 3 weeks before Mary Ellen, and who potentially was Mary Sennett's grandson. He is buried in the same grave, and that also states reopened. I don't even have him in the tree and will have to do a bit of digging around. They are both owned by Mary Sennett, who was her daughter.

One of her other grandsons, Charles Yates, is also in Bootle cemetery, but in C of E section 6 grave 10. He was killed by friendly fire in 1944 whilst on a naval ship off the coast of Normandy, blown through the funnel and sadly died a few days later in Southampton.

Would anyone be able to tell me who else is in these 2 graves.

There are obviously many variations of the spelling including Sinnott and the like which might make it difficult searching for others, Hilary's suggestion of contacting Thornton Crematorium where the records are held is probably your best bet.

I will pop along to Thornton crem and ask them for the records, but will also pay a visit to Bootle cemetery, its only a couple of miles away - who knows, the names may be on the headstones.

Bert has given me food for thought though. Emily Martin. No record of an Emily as yet. I presume she would have been a Yates if she is buried in the grave. Had a look at a few records and cant find an Emily Yates marrying a Martin. I have no record of an Emily Sennett or Sinnett either, as the family are related to the Yates. Emily was born in 1843 ish according to the death records.

Thanks retiringtype; according to the burial register, it has her aged 82 at death. Not that it makes a huge amount of difference, but out of interest, would it be whoever reported the death that decided the age - if one person recorded the death in the registry as one age, could someone else have recorded it with the cemetery as a different age?

The age on the GRO may be that calculated from the birth (quarter and year) so a month or so is neither here nor there. But you are also right that perhaps a different person registered it, we usually say that it's sometimes best guess by a descendant.

I have a day off tomorrow, so may pop along. Emily Martin is in a different grave, Section 1 grave 181 which was reopened, so presumably other family members are there. The owner of the grave is 'Emily Martin', presumably herself. I wonder if she was living in St John's road as a lodger after her husband died. The fact that baby Yates and Emily Martin were buried within a day of each other, I wonder whether there was flu or something in the household that impacted on the young and elderly. Pity the records don't give the cause of death.

Just froze myself at Bootle cemetery. Unfortunately no trace of the two of the graves . I knew there was a stone in Section 6 grave 10, as I had seen it on billiongraves.

Thanks for the positive thoughts Bert . I will visit anyway, as my parents grave is there. I only live a mile away.
