Who Do You Think You Are?

Series 13: 5 - Ricky Tomlinson

Ricky Tomlinson is well known for playing the archetypal Scouser and it turns out that his Liverpool roots run deep. Ricky discovers that he comes from generations of carters, who transported goods on Liverpool's docks when the city was the British Empire's busiest port. Ricky's rage and sorrow build as he discovers how dangerous conditions were for his ancestors, eerily echoing his own fight for workers' rights in the 1970s.

brought to life a little more my court / cellar dwelling (carter) ancestor who was accidentally killed - injuries to body & head when sack of flour fell on him - the family moved from County Durham to Liverpool - his son also became a carter and lived to a "ripe old age" of 58!!!

What an interesting programme. I learnt so much about my Liverpool ancestors who were Carters, Dock Labourers and Seamen. Also the integration of the Irish on my maternal side who lived in the courts. I don't think we realise how hard life was then. Well done to Ricki for the programme.

It was a good programme. I managed to watch it on 'catch up' and enjoyed the bits about the court housing and life working around the docks.

Does anyone know if the Carters Union had a list of names, and if so from when was it formed.

According to Wikipedia
"The Liverpool and District Carters' and Motormen's Union was a trade union in the United Kingdom. It merged with the Transport and General Workers' Union in 1947."

It may be a bit late to throw this in but I am surprised nobody has mentioned, on the programme or on forums since, that there is a memorial statue of a cart horse, in memory of the many carters and their horses that worked on the docks. I think it is near the Maritime Museum.

Well googling found this page
http://www.catalystmedia.org.uk/archive ... _power.php

but it's not the one I was thinking of. What is the one near the bus station with the rope tail?

Hope you can see this from googlemaps

I meant the first one, which I now know is called 'Waiting' and is on the waterfront side of the Dock Road. The other, by the police HQ, is to commemorate freedom from slavery.
