Private George Highton 4317 1/9 btn. B.com.Kings L'Pool reg.
Born 1st Oct 1875 ,Volunteered 9/10/1915 Before conscription ,went to France 1916, injured by shell fire on or about 8/5/1916 ,on injured list 15th June 1916, discharged 26/10.1916 served 12 months 17 days and did not work again Died 28th Oct 1927 Buried in Anfield Cemetary
I make no apologies for returning to Grandad but I have been over to France And Belgium to try and find out but at the time he was injured there were no Major battles just sporadic Shelling what I am hoping for is that one of our more knowlegeable members can tell me where the 9th where at that time (just to travel on that little train that took troops and supplies and brought back the wounded was awe inspiring)

" 1 Other Rank accidentally wounded."
Pity he wasn't named, but almost as good as there's a mention. Good find Bert and well done to the owner of the site.

Hi George You probably already know that you can download the War Diaries for most of the Liverpool Kings Regiments from the National Archives. I downloaded the War Diary for 12 Liverpool Kings - 174 pages which cost £3.50. Hopefully the 1/9 btn is available. Good Luck. yappie

Hi Bert and all, a few years ago I spent a happy day over in the record office at the Kings museum at the Pier Head and trawled through the war diaries did not find anything concrete but haven't been able to go back since hoping for someone with better eye sight could look I used to go to the Kings open day there and corresponded with Joe Deveraeux is he still about (I believed he went to Canada)

A German to English transalator online converts Flammwerfer to Flamethrower.

George,
The word "Neplivitis" doesn't appear in the Oxford Dictionary, also I have a Practitioners Medical Dictionary, 1924 copy and it's not in that.
Is it definitely "Neplivitis"?

George,
This morning when looking I favoured "Nephritis"
Inflammation of the Kidney.

Re: Private George Highton 4317 1/9 btn. B.com.Kings L'Pool reg.
Each hospital kept a War Diary, just like each regiment. The regiment War Diaries refer to junior men simply as 'other ranks', but the hospital Diaries use names. I found several references to my ggf in the Diary of the Wimereux Hospital. He died there, so we knew the location from letters received. It may take some investigation if you don't know which hospitals were used by the regiment, but there should be references in individual accounts from the time.
Also; a lot of nurses kept personal diaries and many were published. If you do uncover the location of the hospital you may be lucky to find a nurse's account of life there at the time. Amazon is probably the best place to look.
