Porridge in Parkhurst!

Post by Tina »

Morning All
Helping a pal out here, his rellie born Lambourn Berks, in the above in 1911 census.
He has scoured nat archives/Times/ IOW local papers/Lambourn etc, to try to find out what his crime was.
Gale site no good as they finish in 1900.
Any suggestions please?
Should he try rootschat?
Thank you

Tina

Hi Tina,
Don't know if your friend has tried Berkshire R O, if they hold the records they may be willing to do a free short search .
Contact can be made via their web site ..
http://www.ancestor-search.info/CRO-Berkshire.htm

Rootschat is a good idea and worth a try if all else has failed .

Me again Tina  my mistake Parkhust appears to come under Hampshire County, from reading your post your friend may have tried Hampshire RO .
Looks as though Rootschat may be the answer .

Hi Tina, made a quick phone call to Isle of Wight R O, they do have some inmate records which haven't been catalouged, some are for 1911 .
The lady I spoke to said if your friend emails them with the details of his ancestor they will see if anything can be found .

Cheers .

Hi

There's a website called Parkhurst Heritage - 2 prison officers have set up a museum. Also I know this sounds a bit daft but has your friend tried contacting Parkhurst the records may still be at the prison. If they are they may have 100 years closure on them.

Hi Tina,
No charge for UK calls, providing the call is under 60 mins .
Hope the 100 yr closure is not applied, it was not mentioned by the lady at the Isle of Wight R O .

Thanks to everyone who has helped.
Info forwarded to my friend, which has been of great help.

He has just found out that Elijah was accused of assault when he was 14yrs old, 1897, 3 weeks in the slammer & 3 years in reformatory school.

Keep ya posted...

Tina

I think we would have called him a "hard case?"

minors records are sealed for 100 years then you have to ask a judge to unseal them for and prove he is dead
