Nationality & Naturalisation
Nationality & Naturalisation
I have a great, great, grandmother born in Germany in 1848. The family settled in Grimsby, England in 1853. There may well be naturalisation records at Kew for the parents but I was wondering whether someone who came here as a 5 year old child would go through naturalisation or anything similar at some stage that would leave records. On the 1901 Census in Liverpool she has place of birth as Germany and in brackets, British Subject. She died four years before the first world war started could she have been interned during the war had she lived? Any comments welcome it's not really stuff that most researchers will have encountered before.

You may well be right that not many of us will have come across this in our own researches, but I hope that we may still be able to come up with some suggestions for you.
One is that I've noticed that Naturalisation certificates are on the National Archives site http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... sation.htm - scroll down the page a bit to see sections for earlier years.
I wonder if you might find this guide useful http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... ID=242&j=1

Some of My Ancesters came from Germany C1847 & their Grandchildren changed their Surname by common usage so that they did'nt get any comments about their Volunteering for The British Army in 1914 & 1915.
I have yet to find any records that show any Naturization or Official Name Changes for them.

Naturilisation
Between 1844 and 1873 Home Office naturalisations were enrolled on the close rolls C54. I am sure some of these are now being made available on Ancestry with no name index.

Nationality and Naturalisation
I have one example of the naturalisation process. It involved a Danish ancestor of mine- Niels Peter Jacobson, who was working out of Liverpool as a first mate. His employers wanted him to be a captain but only British subjects could be captains. So he took action.....
He had to make a deposition to the Home Office in which he explains in pompous English or "Legalise" if you prefer, why he wants to be naturalised - ie he wanted to live here, marry, buy a house etc and had to get it countersigned by three worthy citizens. It went through very speedily. If I had the expertise (which I don't) I would put them up for the delectation of readers on this site. The whole process is recorded on five or six sheets of paper.
Unfortunately he was caught in a storm in early 1851 and his ship was wrecked and everybody went down with it.
However the process WAS documented so you may well find some surviving records. Hope this helps

Sounds very Interesting, I wish I could read the Whole Document.
I did find My 3x Great-Grandfathers Port of Entry record (I think?) but I don't have full privalives on Ancestry to confirm it?
Also, I think I may have found His future Brother in Law coming in through the same port, same Year:
1847, Dover (I always thought they could have come though Hull?)
Carl HERTZBERGER Bn C1817, Germany
Peter BRAUN Bn C1821-27 (he has a Different @ Birth Date on Every Census 1851-1871)
No sign of Peters Sister, Carls future Wife (My 3x Grt-Grandmother):
Dorothea/Dorothera/Dorothy BRAUN Bn C1816, Germany (unless she was 'Margaret Dorothea', I found an 'M.D. BRAUN' & Her only Daughter was named Margaretha/Margaret).

Col,
Spookily interesting question
I spent last night trawling through Ancestry alien images to try and find some info on my mysterious German brick wall (Richard and Johannah Heuss). Only trouble is I have no idea when they arrived. They are on the 1891 census and their first born was in 1886 in London. It could be a friutless search as there are hundreds of pages and I don't really know what I am looking for.

Have You tried the Anglo-German FHS:
http://www.agfhs.org.uk/
I used to be a member, gave them a copy of All My HERTZBERGER (Plus spelling variants) BDM Transcripts years ago, never did find out anything through them.
But, you may have more luck as they are more London Orientated.

Think I visited that site a couple of years ago, but couldn't find anything of use at the time and haven't been back since,
Will have another look.
Thanks

My German people were called Albach and they settled in Grimsby in 1853. They had a few variations on the surname in England ie Albridge, Albeck, Albick, Alpach etc. Johann Peter or John Peter was the head of the family. His wife was called Catharine. They had a big family with lots of possible descendents in England. They came from a village called Burkhardsfelden in the region of Hesse in Germany.
I was in touch with another descendent a while ago who has researched the family for years he supplied me with a lot of German records ie a passport given by German authorities, a family tree going back to the early 1700s, BMDs etc but nothing about naturalisation in this country. There's been a few descendents of this family on the Internet and someone may already have copies if they exist.
My ancestor was their daughter Maria Katharina Albach (born in 1848) or Mary Albridge as she was called on her marriage certificate. Mary grew up in Grimsby and later married Charles Atkinson in Oldham in 1873. Charles and Mary settled in Liverpool in the early 1880s. Only the 1901 census correctly gives Mary Atkinson's place of birth as Germany. The census for 1881 and 1891 say Grimsby for her place of birth. She died in 1910.

So long as you also have a look for her Albachs, I'm sure she won't mind.
