John Scrope Colquitt
John Scrope Colquitt
I am writing on behalf of a historical society here in Seville, Spain. We would like information about John Scrope Colquitt, from Liverpool, who died here in 1812 during the War of Independence. We would like any information about his life and family
Welcome to the Forum
JSC:
"born 1775, eldest son of John Colquitt Esq, of Norris Green, near Liverpool. Trinity College, Cambridge, 1792; Colonel in the Guards. Severely wounded at Barossa and mortally at the capture of Seville, April 1812." From Rugby School Register Vol.1.
As already advised, Google supplies more about this officer - Grenadier Guards.
A younger brother, Samuel Martin Colquitt, born 1777, was also at Rugby, became Rear Admiral, RN, was tried for murder and acquitted, having acted as a second in a duel when a Mr Grayson was killed. Died 1847.
There is a Colquitt Street in Liverpool, possibly named after another relative who was Collector of Customs [grandfather of JSC?].
If no more is offered here I shall have a look in the Central Library next week, as there is sure to be more. What exactly are you seeking?

Thanks for the information. I would really like to get in touch with anyone related to the Colquitt family. John Scrope Colquitt is buried here in a town near Seville and the local history society would like to print a booklet about his life. There was a cross in the town dedicated to this soldier for over one hundred years but now it is lost and the town would like to erect a new one on the 200th anniversary of his death in 2012. He had a son Ernest Augustus Colquitt (1810-1881)but I have no information as to whether he had any children. He also had a daughter Georgina Mary Colquitt (1800-1879) registered in Cheltenham who was never married. I believe the family Goodwin Colquitt (a cousin) moved to Cheltenham and there is a street in Liverpool named after his grandfather, Colquitt Street. Another relative, I believe, Samuel Martin had tobacco plantations in Virginia. Colquitt seems to be a common name in Virginia and Georgia.
It would be great to get any information on the family and to see if there are any portraits of John Scrope Colquitt. They seem to have been an important family in Liverpool but now there is no trace of them. Most grateful for any help.

Duel Sparling and Grayson - Some old Liverpool Worthies
I came acroos the following article published in the Daily Post.
Extract from Liverpool Daily Post 16th April 1897
"The parties met about seven on Sunday morning February 26th 1804 opposite the old chapel in Toxteth Park, and thence proceeded down the retired valley of the Dingle. Lieutenant Sparling's second was Captain Colquitt R.N (Glorious Sam as he had been called) of the friagte Princess; Mr. Grayson's Dr. Macartney, a physician of eminance in the town. Harry Parke was also in attendance but stated on the trial that he did not know for what purpose he was taken to the ground. At the first fire Grayson fell mortally wounded. Lieutenant Sparling and Colquitt were tried at Lancster Azzizes before Sir Alan Chambre, the result being an aquittal for both"

So it would appear that if you needed details about these you would need to approch the Lancashire Record Office.
Amendment made to error, my mistake.

The references above our taken from the Cheetham Society books listing wills proved at Chester for people living in Lancashire and Cheshire. The wills they refer to as they are for Lancashire People will be at Lancashire Record Office as they are for wills proved before 1858.
The reference from the Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire are another series of books. Unfortunately they have missed out the vital information of which volume!! I guess from the date it's one of the early ones.

The reason for the Duel was a conversation that occured between a Major Brooks and Mr.Grayson. Mr.Grayson was angry with Mr.Sparling for breaking off the marriage between him and a relative of Mr.Grayson's and called him a "Villain". The time of the Duel was 7.00am at the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth. The outcome of this Duel was that Mr.Grayson was badly injured and died the next day. Mr.Sparling and Major Brooks were tried for murder and were found not guilty on the 4th April 1804.

Googling Google Books using just COLQUITT, the third page leads to a naval biographical work with details of a different Admiral Colquitt's naval career, ships served in etc.

Last night I was given a bookcalled Wicked Liverpool by Tom Slemen. I was reading it this morning and one chapter is called the duel at Knotts Hole and is all about theis duel.
Apperently in St James Toxteth there is a plaque that reads
Sacred to the Memory of
Edward Grayson of Liverpool
Shipwright
An Honest Man, an Affesctionate Relative and a Sincere Friend
Whose zeal in the defence of insulted Innocence caused him to fall
a Sacrifice to the Law of false Honour, Whereby the injured are unhappily compelled to expose themselves to Destruction at the call of the aggressor
William Sparling was going to marry Ann Renshaw whose mother was the sister of Edward Grayson. The engagement was broken off (Sparling had apparently been told things about his proposed bride) and eventually the duel ensured. I can't paraphrase it as there's a few pages.
How about that for a coincidence!

Thanks for all this information on John Scrope Colquitt. He was in the First Grenadier Guards during the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleon. Please let me know if you have any other information about him, his family or his military career or how I might be able to get in contact with any living relatives. There must be some relative still in Liverpool as this was obviously a very influential family in the city at the time. There is a chapter on the Colquitt family in the book "Bygone Lancashire". Does Colquitt Street still exist? I believe the brother from the duel was one of the leading figures in the Tory Party in Liverpool at the time.
