I haven't been in touch for some time but here is a quick update:
John Scrope Colquitt was from Liverpool. He had two children Ernest Augustus who was blinded in a shooting accident at Lutwych Hall, Shropshire at the age of seventeen and Georgina Mary who moved to Cheltenham. Georgina died in 1879 and in her will she left money and property to her dear cousin Leila Louisa. Leila was the daughter of Goodwin Charles Colquitt- Craven who married the heiress Georgina Craven in 1841 and resided at Brockhampton Park in Gloucestershire. Goodwin was the son of Captain Goodwin Colquitt, a hero of the Grenadier Guards in the battle of Waterloo and cousin of John Scrope Colquitt.
Leila married the Reverend Henry William Coventry in 1868 and they had four children Blanche, Sybil, Winifred and Fulwar. Sybil married Lt Col Ferdinando Dudley William Lea 12th Lord Dudley and her grandson is Jim Wallace, 15th Lord Dudley. I believe that other descendants are Sebastian, Elizabeth, Xenia and Mark Coventry, Stephen Thompson, Michael Fulwar and perhaps more.
Georgina Colquitt left all her family portraits to her cousin Goodwin Charles Colquitt-Craven at Brockhampton Park. I have now got in touch with the descendants as we would really like to see a portrait of John Scrope Colquitt.

Thank you for the summary and update Andrew. I hope your contact is successful and that you get a copy of a portrait, we too would also like to see one.

If you manage to get a photograph of one, we'd appreciate it if you could post a copy on here for us to see, if you need instructions there are some guidelines here http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9817

Good luck

I'll let you know if I hear from John Scrope Colquitt's descendants. I posted letters to them yesterday.

Just to let you know that I have heard from the family. No luck with the portrait. I have been in touch with William Wallace and James Collett-White who are great-great-grandsons of Goodwin Colquitt Craven, John Scrope Colquitt's cousin. Georgina Colquitt, John Scrope Colquitt's daughter, left in her will the family portraits to Goodwin Colquitt-Craven who resided at Brockhampton Hall near Cheltenham. The house was sold in 1899 by Fulwar John Colquitt. However, I have been sent the addresses of some Colquitt-Cravens who now live in Cornwall. Obviously there were many cousins so most of them have lost touch with one another. Hopefully if I keep asking someone may be able to tell me something. I'll keep you posted.

Dear All,
Just to let you know that the John Scrope Colquitt research is still very much alive and well. No luck with the family Colquitt-Craven and no luck so far with the portrait. However, I received a reply from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle and they have a watercolour painted by John Scrope Colquitt called "Spanish Distinctions of Rank, with suggested parallel ones for the British Army, 1811" Cat 390 RCIN 916581. It also appears in the book "Military Drawings and paintings in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen" by Haswell Miller. I've asked them to send me a copy.
We had a meeting on Tuesday in Cadiz with the Consorcio de Cadiz, a group which is organising the anniversary celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the 1812 Spanish Constitution. We have decided to hold in spring 2012 a Historic Congress based on John Scrope Colquitt and the role of the British Troops during the Peninsular Wars. The British Organisation Peninsular 200 will hopefully also be including us on their web page.
As I said no luck with the Cheltenham family. The Colquitt family portraits were left to Goodwin Colquitt-Craven at Brockhampton Park in Cheltenham. When he died the estate went to his son Fulwar John Colquitt Craven who was also in the Grenadier Guards but died at the age of 50 and passed it on to his son Lewis Fulwar Colquitt Craven who sold the house in 1899.
Some interesting information about the Liverpool family. John Scrope's sister married Thomas Parke, of Highfield House, a wealthy Liverpool businessman. An interesting family. His brother was James Parke, Lord Wensleydale and his sister Alice married Sir Sitwell. the marriage had been forbidden and Sitwell was sent on an extended Gran Tour, but when he arrived in Constantinople he heard that Alice had died and hurried back to England, only to find that this was untrue. Sitwell's father then gave his blessing to the marriage. Bridget, John Scrope's sister moved to Cheltenham to live with her niece when her husband died.
Another interesting story. John Scrope had an exlibris designed by the Liverpool engraver Samuel Yates. Yates, a Jew, had three daughters who married the three sons of his business partner.
John Scrope had a stepson, Henry Horsfall Lewen. There is no mention of this stepson in John Scrope's will but his daughter refers to family lands in County Mayo and to her Lewen cousins.
I will keep you informed of any more news.

What an interesting story this has proved to be. Thank you for the further details and we will be curious if you have any further background. I know it's quite a way away but we'll look forward to seeing the entry on the webpage too.

Colquitt - update

Post by daggers »

Andrew Martin has asked me to post these two links, to bring anyone interested up to date on the story of Lt-Colonel Colquitt and his part in the Peninsular War. Do not be deterred by the opening in Spanish in the blog - an English version follows. I do not know about the Facebook as I am not a member.

Well that's a nice catch up, what a lot of research he's done and well put together.

For anybody checking out the blog, each paragraph in Spanish has the English immediately below it and then the main story is all in English and very readable.

John Scrope Colquitt

Post by Andrew Martin »

Thanks once again for your constant support. I owe a special thanks to the Liverpool Society as you were the first to lend me a helping hand and so much has been achieved in this past year and there is so much more still to be discovered.

Yesterday we attended the bicentenary celebrations of the Battle of Barrosa (5th March 1811) which were held at the place where John Scrope Colquitt was seriously wounded. It was a moving ceremony at which the British, Spanish and French all joined together in remembering their dead. Barrosa was the first battle in which the allied forces managed to defeat the French in the Peninsula. It is in a beautiful setting, in a pine forest overlooking the golden beaches of the bay of Cadiz, just outside the town of Chiclana. You can view photos of the event on our blog.

We will soon be included on the web page of Peninsula 200, the official British organisation to celebrate the Peninsular Wars. The historian Richard Holmes, who has taken part in several documentaries for the BBC, says that he is very interested in the Colquitt story and has promised to research the military archives for any more information.

On March 17th we will be officially presenting the John Scrope Colquitt project (here it is known as La Cruz del Inglés) to the media. Hopefully, this will open a few more doors for us.

Allow me to thank you all once more. I will keep you posted as to any further developments.

I have edited my earlier post to replace it with Andrew's message to me:
"Just a quick note to inform you that we have managed to finance the monument to John Scrope Colquitt. The local authorities will cover all the costs of the monument which will be officially inaugurated on Saturday May 5th 2012. The Association is in touch with the British Embassy in Madrid, Peninsular 200 and the Grenadier Guards to organise a a fitting ceremony for this hero of the Peninsular War."

He has since told me that a Colquitt portrait was once hung in the offices at Garston Docks and believes that the offices have been demolished. I have told him that the docks still function, and he is now to contact the local office or the Associated British Ports head office for more information.

Fingers crossed about the portrait at the docks.

I personally would love it if Andrew were able to post a photograph of the monument when it is officially inaugurated. I am sure others would be interested also.

Joan Prudence Picton-Warlow was my grandmother and her mother, Hilda Colquitt-Craven married Robert Picton-Warlow (grandson of Sir Grenville Temple, 10th Bt). Wallace went, I think, to Malvern College but Joan and her sickly brother Fulwar were educated at home by governesses. The family does not have a portrait of Scrope but does of a Colquitt-Craven. I think the latter was governor of Carolina (USA) but would have to clarify as we have many family portraits. Hope that helps!

Hi Nick and welcome to the forum.

You are in Spain? Are you in touch with Andrew? I certainly hope so as it would be wonderful if a family member were able to be at the inauguration of the monument.

Yes...I live in Ronda which is about 1 1/2 hours south of Seville. I've only just joined the forum as I was looking into my grandmother's ancestors and came accross this site. I don't know how I am related to 'Scrope' so would be interested to know where the connection is.

Not been in touch with Andrew...should I be?

Hi Andrew

I am Nicholas Alexander Craven Flynn and my great granmother was Hilda Charlotte Colquitt- Craven. We have many family portraits at the family home in Hampshire including ones of my grandmother (Joan Prudence), Hilda dressed as a Gypsy about to go to a ball(!), Leila Louisa, Lady Arabella Catherine (Leila's little sister) and of their father Goodwin Charles Colquitt- Craven (my dreat great great grandfather). The rest ore of earlier Cravens. How am I related to 'Scrope'? Would love to know? Many thanks.

It is a bit convoluted as we were unable to find any direct descendants, but please claim your relationship as it would be wonderful if you attended the inauguration as a family member and told us about it afterwards.
