Hi Droid1,
You are in Cheshire but the 'local library' is Waterford? Which parish registers are you interested in? Which country, mainland UK or Ireland?
If you are asking about Irish registers, from experience only the minimal information is often provided; child's name, parents, sometimes mother's maiden name, name and date of baptism. I have 3 where there isn't a date of birth!
An email to Waterford Library would probably give you more information on access. I do know some libraries will do a search for you. My baptism certs were obtained via a professional researcher.

Before paying Euros, or at least depending on how many Euros, have your checked the familysearch site as all birth/marriage/death entries are uploaded there now, having said that civil registration doesn't date back as far as it does in England - only to 1864 I think? I know Dickiesame will correct me if I'm wrong on that.
You may be able to get a certificate ordered online if you find the appropriate entries.
Germaine posted some hints to help others, after she had successfully ordered.

Hi,
MaryA is correct in that civil registration of all BMDs began in Ireland in 1864. There was previous legislation from 1845 for the compulsory (civil) registration of all non-Catholic births. This is a very informative article that may assist:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/brow ... /index.htm
Since you are paying a researcher, they will probably simply photocopy the register entry or take a digital photograph. The cost should be nominal since the Irish GRO will provide a photocopy of a post-1864 Register BMD entry for only 6 Euro, post paid. That's about £4.75.
From my experience with a great Limerick researcher, where the event was a pre-1864 Catholic one the researcher took a photocopy of the parish register. The cost was virtually nothing on top of her time. The researcher should be instructed you want documentary evidence of any 'finds' they make. And don't be put off by being told you have to pay for an 'official certified copy'.
If the event took place from 1864 you would do better to identify the event in the FamilySearch database as MaryA suggested and order photocopies from the Irish GRO. http://www.groireland.ie/

While all the entries are uploaded, not all the extra detail such as parents has been uploaded yet in every case.

I just wanted to second what DS said about buying photocopies from the Irish GRO in County Roscommon. They have all 19th Century registered events pre and post 1864 for both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. All you do is print out and fill in the PDF form or just include all the relevant information in a letter. It only costs me £4 in our currency for a photocopy that's great value for an original image sent by post from Ireland.

I believe if you are in Dublin you can still call in there, check the indexes and order your photocopy across the counter.
Don't know how long this facility will continue as I believe they have been threatening to close it for years and indeed the postal service has been transferred already to Roscommon.

Many thanks for all the replies, I will contact the researcher about documentation for any entries found, yes I do require documentation as proof of who my great grand father was and his Father and Mother and any brothers and sisters who where born In Kilmacthomas.
Via email the researcher told me that they had found my g.grand father who cheated a bit on his Uk cenus regarding age born 1851 not 53/57 as census told me.
My G.grand father was RC born before 1864 so it would appear any ancestors of mine will have to check Parish Registors, in different parts pf R.O.I. for other members of my family, on my Mothers side

Hi Droid1,
RE:

RE:
To be fair to your g.g.father, the reality is he probably didn't know his exact year of birth. Many working class people wouldn't know exactly unless the year was also one of a significant event such as a Coronation, a Royal birth the child was named after or a 'celebrated' battle etc.Via email the researcher told me that they had found my g.grand father who cheated a bit on his Uk cenus regarding age born 1851 not 53/57 as census told me.

Without a fair bit of luck you are in for the long haul, as we say over here. You need to check the actual census summary page of every UK census you find him in for a clue as to where in Ireland he was from. The transcriptions may have omitted a vital word.
Then it's usually a matter of money again I'm afraid. His birth or baptism might be on the CLDS site: http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/search/ ... search.asp
His parish register birth/baptism might be uploaded at the Irish Family History Foundation site http://www.rootsireland.ie/
It is free to search but if you get any hits it will cost 5 Euro to see each interesting record. However they have now introduced a wider search facility where you can add parents' names to the search which helps.
Found him in the 1861 to get his age. Then I had a quick look for births/baptisms, all counties, 1829 +/- 2years. No Lawrence/Laurence. A 'No forename' search will show you the 'spread' of the name and it gave 104 hits predominately in the north east of what is now the RoI, in Co Louth, with a few over in Roscommon.
The site search will not allow you to wildcard a forename so L* gave no hits. I extended the years span to +/- 5 without a forename and got 2 hits in Louth.
Church Baptism - Roddy, Lau - 1826 - Co. Louth
Church Baptism - Ruddy, Laur - 1833 - Co. Louth
There may be others in other counties but...
Worth a small investment? 5 Euro = abt £4.25.
